henry said that he was unsure of his future(as most of the Buell employees probably are)but when i asked him if he would be the race guy providing support to the rumored xr1200 class at the AMA, he smiled and said he would be available. really good guy! tim | ||

made it to Daytona to drop the bike in the garage wednesday afternoon, pick up the team hammer credentials and camped out in the grass. got in early to tech thursday and was in group 3 for practice. i have to say the walls and speeds were pretty intimidating and i don't think i actually held full throttle on the banking but finished opening it as i came on the straights. no issues in practice, the international horseshoe seemed to be the most difficult spot for me. got out early with ccs on friday morning practice group 2 with track damp in places and turned a 2:10 best lap. missed 2nd practice helping Charles Justice get unloaded with his fractured ankle. Charles asked me to run his GSXR 1000 with him in team challenge and of course i said sure. Charles went to practice during the TC and after some laps the practice was red flagged so no practice for Tim The races came around and Charles went out first with plenty of speed in the straights but with limited movement getting the bike around the corners turned into his weakness. i think he came in after about 7 laps and then it was my run. HOLY SH!T!!! is that bike strong and manueverable. i ran 10 laps and was seeing 186/187 on the speedo on the banking almost every lap(except the one that i thought that the gearshift was stuck in 4th and finally realized that i had 5000 more rpm to go). my right hand was numb(but my grin was permanent) when i came in for Charles to run a few. Charles went back out for about 5 laps and came back in in not the greatest condition. he was hurting!! he said that we were done but if i wanted to go back out a bit it would be ok. i jumped on and did another 5 or 6 laps which was just enough to put us in 4th place in the TC. they told me i was doing some 2:01's. WOOHOO!! Charles was doing some 1:58"s WOOHOO twice!!! too bad he was injured as i am sure we could have podiumed if he was healthy!! my next race was in GTO against the 1000's and big twins. i no longer had any trouble holding the throttle to the stop and although i didn't get a good start in turn 1, i managed to get people on the brakes in the chicane and in turn 1 and finished 7th. the most interesting moment was when the experts caught me on the banking between Nascar 1 & 2- 2 pass on the top/ while 2 pass on the bottom with the 3rd guy on the bottom leaving me about an inch when he cut back into the lead pack draft. i couldn't stay with them/ the Buell ran out of motor. that was it for Friday as the ASRA guys took over for qualifying. | ||

saturday was practice only for me as i had no races. the track was wet again in the international horseshoe and i had a couple of minor rear slides with no getoffs. Charles had an unlimited supersport race so we stole some stock rims from his friend Billy"s bike and got him outfitted and ready to go. he went out with no practice again as the pain was strong. this time he took a 1/2 a pain pill and was looking to decimate the field. he got a good start, lost a position in the infield and when he nailed the throttle to head for the banking-BOOM- chain adjuster bolt bent letting the sprocket side come forward and slung the chain into the rider behind who went down without injury. Charles said the guy was unhurt but his Ducati Factory bike was F'd up. Charles and his crew got loaded up with bike, tools and gear and went in search of a Suzuki dealer that had a subframe and the other parts he needed. luckily the engine didn't get damaged. he gave me a call later in the afternoon that the mission was accomplished by some great people in St Augustine and he would be ready for sunday. | ||

i hung around the track Saturday afternoon riding my bicycle and watching the 8 hour Moto Gt finale as the temperature was dropping fast in the early evening. woke up sunday to a cold morning in the 50's and a cold track. practice was sketchy but uneventful for me. the first round of races went by with many problems and lots of getoffs. Charles went out in race 7, unlimited grand prix. i forgot to mention that Charles came in 2nd in the GTO race Friday and finished with a badly blistered and chunked tire. well, Charles also finished 2nd in this race after a long wait for a restart after a red flag. i went out in race 9, heavyweight superbike and was in 3rd and passing at turn 1 when i was pushed outside by the 2nd place guy when he changed his line and went wide allowing almost the rest of the pack by. things settled out and i think i was in 11th or 12th. i managed to pass somebody on the brakes every lap and finished 6th!! i was getting outclassed on motor again Charles went out again in race 11, unlimited superbike and again was the class of the field only losing 1st by. 02. the other guy had picked the right gearing and pulled the classic Daytona draft pass at the finish line for the win. not bad for Charles, 3 2nd's, a 4th and a dnf for the weekend with a fractured ankle as a handicap. GO Charles!!! i went out in race 12, supertwins and managed a decent start with decent laps and inherited 3rd halfway through the race by some interesting getoffs. unfortunately for me i was draft passed off the banking to the finish line twice during the last 2 laps and finished 5th. however i did manage to run the whole weekend with no getoffs, put in some 2:06's on the Buell, 2:01's on the Suzuki and finish every practice and race. look out March, the new season starts!!! tim | ||

i didn't make the same mistake as i did at Barber trying to stay with Jordan from the start as that guy is FAST!! he came in friday looking weak and told me he had been sick all night but was going to give it a go. he gave it a hell of a go this weekend!!! CONGRATULATIONS JORDAN!!!! tim | ||

next year i will have to give more thought into my box stock approach from this year. where did i leave my checkbook, savings account, 401k, liver, kidney, lung, etc.....  tim | ||

thanks. i was invited to pit in the garage with some great folks and had a great time for my first Daytona riding experience. Joel Spalding, his wife Cindy, Glen Carnell, his wife Missy,(Cindy and Missy are sisters), Jay Smith and his mom Betty, Ray and Jim Berard were very welcoming to the new guy and willing to give good advice to my questions. Henry Duga spent a good bit of time in our pit area and Danny Bilansky, Walt Sipp and Michael Barnes were all seen in the area as well. Sunday saw some of the local Buellers in the area to help as well. Laird (paintshaker)Canfield, Paul(don't remember board or last name,sorry), Mike(xopti)Cobb and his son all came to lend a hand. Pat Mooney and his son Pat jr. stopped by as well to talk about the Buell situation with us and noticed a loose header that we scrambled to fix on Joel's thunderbike at 3rd call. good eye Pat!! all this support came in handy as Jay came in on the wagon and put his bike in the trailer after a crash with another rider. 10 minutes later it was decided that all the parts were available to get him in his next race and the pit race was on. everybody pitched in and Jay got to tech at 2nd call and the last bolt was tightened at 3rd call and Jay went out and took 2nd place. great job guys!!! All in all i had a great intro to the Daytona track and routine for next year's run at a good finish in the SE region!! THANKS ALL!!! tim | ||
