Ferris!! Don't stop posting while you wait for some of us more laggardly types to come back online! Awesome and really readable story. I am humbled by your ability to write! I am supposed to have finished a little writeup on our chapter ride but got so anal-retentive that I stalled it in the proof-reading. Glad to see you back posting here again and really sorry I had other commitments that kept me away from the races. We're doing the chapter ride out to Battletrax on the 27th. I may tag along and just watch - we have track day at Willow the next day (Monday) and I'll see how I feel about thrashing the Great Pumpkin 2 days in a row. |

Ferrisator: Too cool, but that's not your best picture! I'm still partial to the "Ferris Bueller Sunrise Series". I also have the picture, hanging in the Buellseum, that you shot of Erik, Brother Howie and I, moments after you PUSHED me off that M-2. And don't feel bad about snapping pics of a rashed bike. Keen eyes will notice that most the magazine photos of the "first S-1 in public hands", at the Anaheim IMS show, always hand me standing in front of it with my considerable mass covering where the headlight USED to be. If I am not mistaken, twas also you who snapped this beauty! We gotta get together again soon! Court

Court, That was Ferris who took that pic. Would you like a hi resolution copy of it? Don't think Ferris would mind at all! Been scanning a bunch of photos for Ferris (his Buell album that traveled everywhere with him)so he can also have a digital copy of the album. The pic above is one from the album. Tell me the resolution you would like and I'll zip it off to you ASAP. Jim |

Ferris, Awwright - I'm gonna get shamed into posting our BRAG ride story when I get back in tonight. Here's a couple teasers: Pic 2 - Tim was riding slack, note his riding position as he sets up for the turn (gives you a sense of how fast we were riding for that pic) |

Jim: I'm betting it was Ferris who took the picture. It was the first day he met Erik and the day Erik and I gave him a bit of a riding lesson. Actually...one of the lessons was by a "Court Double" wearing my helmet, an identical black Aerostich and on my Buell, doing a non-Courtlike 3 block, 3 gear mondo-wheelie. It was actually my twin brother....

"body language indicating equal parts malice and merriment" Ferris , You write with a style rarely encountered in the virtual world.I feel quite priveledged to have been IN that story!Besides following you on that sincerely enjoyable rrromp around and through that mass of squidness!I , too got a helmet guffaw when I saw that cruiser dude take a WHOLE LAP with his kickstand down!I wonder if he thought he was draggin' his floorboards around them left apexes?Next time it'll be camcorder attached to the helmet so we can relive these too fun to be legal moments!! OH yeah.....and lots more merriment to follow. |

this stuff is good for the soul, gang Court, one of my favorite memories from that weekend (the first Blue Groove, back in '96) was when you zipped up beside Erik while he was stopped at a traffic light, yanked the keys from his S2's ignition, threw them across the highway, and blasted away on Barney in a hail of rubber and exhaust. Erik, judging by how nonchalantly he dismounted, was no stranger to this particular form of entertainment, and simply waded into the ditch and retrieved his keys like it was the most common thing in the world to be a company CEO standing knee-deep in weeds on the side of a busy road. your twin-brother Howie [Howard Kelly, Hot Bike] had a seemingly endless bag of tricks up his sleeve, always ready to spring on the unsuspecting (which, um, was typically me). i'll never forget the sight of him wheelying up the hills of San Francisco from traffic light to traffic light, the front tire ONLY touching down if he happened to catch a red light. he later denied being a good rider, but, with an evil little Court-like grin, confessed that he was ALWAYS good at popping wheelies funny you should mention us getting together sometime soon, as SPLASH (and Four-Play, and AfterGlow) is only three months away... um, Bonneville? is that up in eastern Washington somewhere??? Death Valley was on the agenda this weekend, a Friend 'n me, 400 miles there and back is all, but akin to a trip to the edge of the universe in terms of the sublime and surreal. the storm that hammered the West Coast yesterday and today? ha ha, it couldn't even begin to find it's way to Furnace Creek (well, if you don't count the gale-force winds we encountered when we rounded the corner at Stovepipe Wells...) still, it was warm (well, if you don't count the brisk-to-the-bone ascent of Towne's Pass leaving the Valley this afternoon...), and the weather really couldn't have been any nicer (well, if you don't count the rain we encountered summiting Walker Pass a couple hours ago...) the Thong continues to please (well, if you don't count the seized speedo-drive coming back from California Speedway last Sunday night...), and in spite of the fact that a White Lightning is THE MOST MISERABLE MOTORCYCLE IN THE WORLD TO HUSTLE INTO HORRENDOUS HEADWINDS, i learned this weekend that an S1W IS the greatest motorcycle of all time when it comes to pounding the pavement on Highway 190 between Lone Pine and Panamint Springs! Erik and Court, if the two of you's ever find yourselves with a long weekend you don't know what to do with, give me a ring, hop a plane, we'll swing by Bartels' and pick up a couple of media mules, and i'll show you a guaranteed grand time out here in the land of tumbleweeds and Joshua Trees ride to lean, FB |

Don't forget these upcoming stellar motorcycling events: Sunday April 27, Battletrax at the Camarillo airport. Pegscrapin' Hooligans, this is Round 3 of the Buell National BattleTrax Series. Ride in with Glendale's Golden State BRAG group or get directions to the event from the link. Saturday May 3, Songdog Spring Rally. If you've never been to a Songdog Rally, go to this one. With the recent rains, springtime flowers are sure to abound. Imagine pitching yer tent in a flower bed! $60 for all you can eat & drink, tri-tip steaks, brontosaurus size beef ribs, live entertainment and possibly an air show. This is not a Buell event per se, but it is when Jen & I arrive. People still talk about when we showed up on the S1 with all our camping gear because the Harley was broke. Anybody up for a unique So Cal tradition? Email me for more details. Sparky |

Smog question: I have been asked for the second time within a week of installing my JAZ puke can if I have ever been busted for violating CA pollution laws by having it setup the way I do...(it's attached to front tubes and pretty visible) Anybody have a take on this? I haven't heard of anybody (yet) getting a smog bust for having the puke somewhere other than their intake. I have the fuel vent just disguised behind frametubes but it's the puke can that is causing me some concern. Has anybody gotten busted or have you gotten written up as a "bonus" fixit??? I'm not going back but just want to know what I'm in for. |

Jim, Yeah, the puke can on the S3 - it's mounted on the front tube I just never gave it a second thought about having the puke can visible til the guy at the gate at Willow asked me if I ever got in any trouble. Started me to wondering if I ought to relocate the thing to a less visible spot. No way am I gonna plumb it back the way it was. She's running right now. |

A New Baby in the Family Brought the "Little Bolt" home last night Thanks, Ernie, Chris and Glendale HD Guess you can say that Chris and Ernie and Glendale haven't pissed me off too badly if I went and threw more $$ at them. And, at the risk of baiting more FLAMES, I am satisfied with the reliability of my S3 as it approaches its first 10,000 miles - some of it pretty hard riding. The "Little Bolt" is going to evolve into a street/track bike so she's going to start looking different every time she's out in public. Being able to do my own carbon bodywork is a plus. (say "bye-bye" warranty) I'll see y'all on Sunday's ride. Not gonna be doing anything hairy but just put-putting along for the fresh air. Still looking for a broken engine that I can tweak into a track motor... ...oh, and in answer to the unasked question: NO! I am NOT getting rid of the S3 - my beloved Great Pumpkin/Chris Matty Replica/"Big Bolt" - sheeeit, who else has 3 nicknames for a single bike - I CAN'T get rid of her. ...and Saro, Loli, James... I am not worthy |
