My drive belt broke while I was down shifting from second to first. I have a 08 1125r with 13500 miles. Has anyone else lost a belt? Will Buell warranty this? Cost? Will a harley belt work? The nearest dealership is 4 1/2 hours away and she's my only transportation. Thanks

Buell has covered them in the past. To the best of my knowledge they are specific to the 1125r.

I thought I read somewhere that the belts had a lifetime warranty on them.. I could be wrong though

I know where a slightly used belt is in CO, if push comes to shove. Let us know if you have any problem getting one.

There is no lifetime warranty on the belt. They are covered in some instances based on circumstance.

Remove the belt guards and look at the inside of them. Tell me what you see.

in the buell pamphlet they say the belt never needs replacing? You would think that sounds like a life-time warranty

It doesn't have a scheduled replacement...just when it fails on the side of the road.

My plan is to run this original belt until 15k. Then I will order a new one (just like I would with a chain). The current belt will go under the seat as a roadside repair.

To do a belt swap on the side of the road, you'd have to remove the rear wheel. Is it feasible to do that without a rear stand and better tools than are found in the tool kit under the seat? Has anyone already done this successfully?

I had one pop at 22k or so, as well. Stranded me in the middle of nowhere in the mountains of Arkansas. Popped on a rather unceremonious and gentle downshift.

Despite having TWO cell phones on two different networks, neither worked. A buddy rode back for 1 hour, then brought truck and trailer back on a 2 hours drive to rescue my broke dick butt.

I love the belt, but man, you get NO SIGNAL when it's going to go. It just pops.

The rear wheel does not need to come off. Theoretically the tool kit has all the tools necessary. Do a search, Zac4Mac has a thread about it.

Z has documented the R&R of the belt w/o removal of the rear wheel. Hardest part is breaking the rear axle loose.

HOW FUNNY!!! I broke my FIRST belt ever today at the track!

at almost EXACTLY 13500 MILES TOO!! (13400 to be exact)


no concerns, though, i had a spare with me, and it was changed out without even missing a session!!


the old belt zipped off as i was pounding through the gears on the front straight away. i didnt hear it brake, just suddenly lost power. i thought i found a false neutral, but i looked down and didnt see a belt. coasted back into the pits, and 30 mins later, i was rolling again!

the worst part about the incident was that it happened just as i was passing a ducati. i just had hunted him down for the previous half of the track!

I broke my belt at around 9k miles and the dealer replaces it with no problems. Their only concern was if i have be hot roding the bike a lot.

I thought the belt was theoretically suppose to last until at least 30k miles?

I just found it weird that there was no tell tale signs of the belt failing, it just split & wrapped around the front sprocket killing the motor. Thought I messed up the motor somehow... I'm going to order a belt tomorrow, does anyone know the number to Buell customer service?

The thread must be bad karma. I was just stripping the bike down for track day and one of the tail section bolts fell down on top of the motor. No problem, I thought. Happens once and a while. I will just pull the bike off the wheel chock and jiggle the bike so the bolt falls out.

Well, turns out the friggin bolt somehow ended up on the inside of the belt right next to the front spocket.

Of course, you have to jerk the bike to get it out of the wheel chock, so I yanked hard several times. It wouldn't move. It's the thing in gear? No, it's not. Jerk some more. Hear a very slight metal grinding noise. Shit. Now I realize where the bolt fell.

Sprocket seems okay. However, one of the teeth on the belt got a bite taken out of it..about 1/4 of pencil eraser in size.

Anyone know if this is something to worry about?

I still am amazing the bolt found its way in there.

Fresno, I would spend the $150 and replace it rather than finding out the hard way wither its fine or not. It probably is fine, but would make a good spare to keep on the rack.

I replaced the belt on my Ulysses when it turned 2 years old. I just kept it as a spare. I still have it.

having a spare belt is cheap insurance against having a bad day.

i had a spare and i didnt lose more than 5 minutes of my track day while changing it out.

i would have been very upset about throwing the rest of the day away if i DIDNT have that belt handy.

New belts go on fairly hard. Best to put the new belt on at home and carry the "old" one as a spare, much easier to change by the side of the road.

Broke my second belt on friday while commuting to work while changing into second gear and very nearly got cleaned up by the car behind me, the first one went at 9000k's (4500 miles) this one went at 29000k's (15000 miles)it seems to be an inherant problem with them and also a safety issue sooner or later someone will be killed by a motor vehicle due to a belt breaking in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If a certain brand of new car broke two tailshafts every 12 months what would happen?

My 1125R is my only form of transport and the dealer does not carry a spare belt in stock so the whole affair has cost me a days pay and no wheels for god knows how long. not good enough this one Harley part on the Buell make it a bloody untrustworthy lemon

What can be done we should not have to bear the cost and inconvenience of a sub standard part.

I love the rest of my Buell
