Someone should contact Cecil, and see if he would ride the Buell in the Dakar. I have ridden my S-3 in some extreme condiditions, they go pretty well until the susp. bottoms. You're going to need AW along to keep rebuilding the engine and gear box. Dakar is tough on equipment. Think about climbing 100' sand dunes in 100 dgree plus heat. How much modifying can you do to the bike? Paul | ||

Nice idea, but come on, for all the things a Buell is, it AINT a Dakar bike. Hell, even if you put a Buell engine in a GS BMW it still wouldnt be a Dakar bike. But what if it was a KTM Rallye style bike around a 2003 M2 engine, with cooling fan/s etc......? What do you think the weak points in that engine would be that would need addressing so that it lasted the distance? PPiA | ||

I've got a line on a cheap Leece-Neville alternator. You know, one of those big-assed 12v, 160 amp jobs? That ought to keep all those fans running. But I think we're back to two cylinders, one for the rear wheel and the other for the alternator. | ||

Snail, I think you can modify Dakar Rally equipment as much as you want. The cars and lorries are highly modified, many with sophisticated suspensions that are one of a kind. The whole damn Schlesser buggy is special purpose Dakar only. I would think that the same goes for the bikes. I venture to say that a Buell powered off-road bike could be constructed, maybe adapting frame and suspension components from KTM bikes since they're the bikes to beat in the Dakar Rally, and there'd be no problem getting it entered. Someone in Euro land is already offering this as a Blast kit and Ralph tells me of a guy in Florida converting his Blast to Supper- motard  I checked this guys site - don't know if I would trust it - but he says they have the parts to make it happen. Chop, Interesting comments coming from a 6'-7" tall man who goes land speed racing on a 50cc minibike sidecar rig. We're not talking about a stock Buell chassis. There is absolutely no reason why a Buell Blast cannot be made to withstand the rigors of the Dakar. Like I sad, far lesser bikes have done it. Paul, I'm not familiar with the rules. I assume there are no class restrictions other than it be a motorcycle. I could be wrong. They do have quite a few different classes for the four and more wheeled vehicles. I think the big cargo truck class is one of the more interesting. Peter, You know me, if it isn't a serious challenge I'm not interested. I'm not so sure we should aim for the podium the first year. I really think a single cylinder would be the way to go, less heat, less parts to fail, easier to maintain/repair, lighter and easer to handle, and cheaper too. A spare engine/tranny might be a good idea. We'd definitely want the drivetrain thoroughly cryo-treated and comprised of only the best most durable components. That one cylinder would have no trouble keeping cool. A reliable 50 RWHP on a fairly light bike should work fine going up the dunes and still be able to maintain a decent pace on the higher speed terrain. I would also want the frame and critical chassis parts to all be bead blasted at all welded joints, that after application of judicious reinforcement/gusseting. Before the Australian race we might want to tackle something of even smaller scale like the Baja 500 and or Baja 1,000 no? Seems to me a performance shop located near the Rocky Mountains would be served well by supporting an off road effort like this. | ||

Paris Dakar, that would be cool. Blake, you want the podium as a goal you better join the KTM team. Any amateur effort should be happy to finish. The fellow feature in this months Cycle World is a good example. $75000 plus, months of training, and serious physical toughness got him a finish. This price included a bike and some support. Could a Buell do it? We would need to custom build a complete motorcycle. I can't believe anything like a stock frame would work. Maybe do a Blast motor in a older Buell tube frame with off road suspension. How much low speed, deep sand lugging in 100 degree heat do you have to do and how much of that can an aircooled motor take? Perhaps electric fans and shrouding would help? A spare bike? HA! how about several spares of everything including 3 chassis, 4 motors 3 transmissions? Thats what the fast guys use. They use them all up sometimes. Cracked frames, blown motors and transmissions are common. Of course to use this stuff you need to fly the spares to th eovernight stops and have someone who can stay up all night fixing them. It would certainly be a worthy challange | ||

DaveS said he would donate a bike for the effort. This is what we should be concentrating on!!  | ||

I was tempted to tell him that when I couldn't understand his Indian receptionist that I didn't turn and walk. In a city where cabbies speak 92 languages, I'm done in my by a Southern "hick" accent. My goal for the next month is to get "stupid", buy gold chains and learn to say "youse" instead of "ya'll". SIDEBAR: You want guts? A person I've met through writing has taken over (the impetus of this change in the DOB) and you want guts? The first move was to fire 29 people for acts from illegal payoffs to accepting a carton of Marlboros from a contractor. AFTER firing them, she wrote a letter to the families that said, in essence, "eventually the monetary fines and jail time will pass, but you will always be left with the shame that ________'s dishonesty has brought upon your family". Ya know - that "Without Shutting It Off" thing has me thinking... What if it was a Relay style ride? 24/7 non stop... Kinda hard to coordinate - but someone rides for x hours / miles, then hands the bike off to the next rider. The bike would only stop for fuel and rider drainage. -Saro | ||

Ought to consider a real fast chase plane to have tagging along. One that can get into Boulder Municipal,and then back out over-grossed with AW and his tools. I shouldn't be so pessimistic. I think it's a great idea, especially the Pony Express angle. Maybe break the trip into sections, and then form a group to cover each section. | ||

Court....I can sympathize with you on the job front. While I already have a paying job, I've been unhappy with my current situation. After 6 weeks and 6 interviews, I don't even get a "I'm sorry" phone call. The whole time I was told I was the perfect candidate for the job. After the sixth interview, I was even asked to start "recruiting" my support staff. I'm so pissed that I sent a letter to their corporated HR department commenting how poorly I felt the process was ended. If anyone needs someone to ride an XB9S from coast to coast, feel free to give me a call. I could use the break from reality | ||

Pete, The car drove down there just fine. I watched it on TV this year. He and another car ended up at the edge of this plateau trying to find a way down. Both of them said "#%&$ it" and just drove off the edge. The guy driving this one is Stephane Peterhansel. Multiple winner (I think 6 times?) in the bike division. Used to ride for Yamaha France, before switching to cars. Ages? I think a couple of them are pushing their 40's, but most are younger. ...and it'd probably be better to keep Henrik in a good mood in case he ever needed to go all medical on me  PPiA | ||
