Peter after following you and Henrik around the Rockies last year I agree with everything you say about the GS's ability, but and it's a big but I think a bike also has to move your soul as well as your body and I just can't get moved by somthing that looks like it should have been put down at birth and even it's mother would have a hard job loving.
But that is only my opinion.
FMJ has got it right no one bike is all things to all people ie: you need more than one bike.

Henrik,
:)

Blake,
Grizzly and I are planning an attempt. The cost is just so high though that maybe we'll do the Australian Safari instead.

Paul,
I agree. I wanted a Cagiva Elefant (they were winning the Dakar at the time). They had one at Frasers in Sydney. I went in to buy it but the salesman had such a smartarse attitude that I walked out instead.
Next on my list was a Triumph Tiger. At the same time the 1100GS came out. It was so goddamn ugly that I wouldn't even consider it. I rode the Tiger and was disappointed. Nice engine, but the rest didn't work for me.
Then BMW did a ride weekend at Eastern Creek. Now if someone is going to let me cane their bikes around a race track, I'll go no matter what the bikes are . I rode four models. Three did nothing, but I was laughing when I rode the GS. I couldn't believe that such a big ugly stupid looking bike could do what I was asking it to. I came back in to the pits and the dealer saw the look on my face. "Gotcha!" was all he said.
Never looked back.

Blake,
How serious is your dreaming? Like to have a go at the Australian Safari in 2004 or 2005? There are companies that will rent you a bike and provide backup if you need it.
Grizzly and I are getting more serious with our talks.

I'd do well to give the Baja 500 and the Baja 1,000 a try first. I've been a big fan of the Dakar since Speedvision started covering it. Yes, it runs well into 5 figures $US to mount a viable attempt. Maybe we could find a sponsor... ya think we could fit an 8 gallon tank on a Nallin Racing dirt tracker? :D I mean if we were gonna do it, it wouldn't be to win, it would just be to finish right? So what could we do to make our effort stand out as a noteworthy achievement? Run the Dakar on a freakin Buell, that's how.

Blake....I've often thought that Erik could make one bad ass multipurpose bike if given the time & money. The thought of having a Buell GS gives me the chills. I'd buy one in a New York minute:D

Do I hear the next Team Elves project? ;)

One note on the GS, at the Battletrax event last year in Peoria Il 1 fella showed up up on one. His first lap he kicked all of our asses. Pretty much everyone of us there stood with our jaws on the ground as we watched this big pig of a bike smoke our Buells & a 748 Ducati. Very impressive to see that in action.

I would be willing to help/ride for anyone or anything in a Baja, or Dakar rally. I am a good wrench and I can survive and thrive in anything that is tossed my way. If anybody is going to do one of these, I am not a big money guy, but I would be willing work off 4 to 5 times my expense. I would do just about anything to be a part of one of those. Anybody need a kidney, anything?

My Cyclone Burped!

I took the first really hard ride of the season on a hot day today. Probably the first time since last fall that the engine got really hot.

I pulled into the garage, which is up a driveway with a really steep grade, and where I did a pretty hard stop at the top. After getting off the bike, I saw the right side of the back wheel had oil on it.

Further investigation revealed that it's source was the vent line from the transmission. It is not a *lot* of fluid, maybe one ounce max, and it appears to have happened at the very end of a 50 mile ride. The primary was apart late in the fall, but I don't think I overfilled it.

So was this just a random accidental sloshing burp thing, where things just happened to hit the right way at the right moment? Or are there other things I should check? There are no other signs of issues with this bike (besides what is probably a bad shifter drum and or a bad 2/3 gear pair).

I will pull the derby cover and check the level, and I am due for a primary chain tension adjustment anyway. Let me know if there are any other checks to make.

It's pretty bad when you know where your leak came from based solely on the smell of the oil :)

John,
Thanks for the thanks. Glad the site was of practical use to someone.

Court,
While you are mailing the CW to Peter maybe you can stick a T-shirt in the mail to Michael Brown? :] And send Ferris a cheap little digi-cam while your at it.

Captain,
You gone rational in your old age? :D I'm dead serious; I'm not talking about a stock Buell though. Maybe a Blast derivative with LONG legs and big fuel tank. The Dakar has been run on far lesser machines not THAT long ago. "Team Elves Does Dakar" is kinda what I'm thinking. Who's up for it? We have our riders, Peter and Griz. Now all we need is a bike, some navigation and communication equipment, a team manager, and some funding. Who's up for it? We could be ready in time for the 2005 rally.

Yeah....we got that.

I think I know where a pair of matched bikes could be had. At least, I know some folks who (to quote Dyna)are "much better tapped into motorcycles than Blake and Court" who have a habit of donating that type of stuff. They are providing bikes for an upcoming secret similar Tex-Venture.....

Don't laugh....it's an entirely doable deal.

What kinda bikes ya thinking?

Court,
Thank you in advance for the magazine. You're worth more money, who do I see?
I don't know if you guys know how much the Dakar costs. I added up about € 17,000 WITHOUT the bike and spares. That's just the entry fee, fuel, deposits, flights etc. It's a seriously expensive race.
Love to do it though.

Okay...I'd conceded that. I had tears in my eyes and may have misread it. :)

Peter - it, in my mind, is a doable deal. To present it would require the typical racing proposal like we used to do for the GN series. At the very least, it'd require things including riding resume's, proposed budgets and some C:B items as mind fodder....a "what's in it for them" type of deal.

It doesn't require a "big name" rider if it's logic line in on or can be configured to support something the company stands for.

I'd start a thread in the racing area and at least keep the discussion alive among the serious.

Peter....It seems do-able to me. Your figures are about $10,000 American (if I'm using the proper conversion). Take out flights (all volunteers that pay their own way) and your down a couple of grand. The bike (like the Elves bike) would need to be donated. Probably same with the parts. Now get a few sponsors for entry fee & gas. Raise some $$$ from the BWB group. This could be a very viable Team Elves event for 2004 or 2005.

Well, Blake, now that you mention it...

But if you're going to run it with a single cylinder, I'd suggest starting out with two. Block one off and have it immediately available as a spare for when the other siezes.

Oh, wait a minute. You weren't talking about using my bike for this event, were you? No, of course not.

Sorry.

You're going to run a Buell in the Dakar? Ha ha ha ah gasp, pant, snort, wheeze...ha ah ha ah ah ha....

NO!

It won't work. You ever watch the Dakar? Theres sand dunes, rocks, ruts, forests, and mud, and dust.

Too much, this is crazy...... I want in.

Dakar on a Buell sounds like as good and idea as Aaron's lets see how fast s/n 50 of 50 RR1000s can go. I would be very suprised if we can't get this thing going by 2005. Lord know this group is crazy enough.

Lake_Bueller,
More like $18,000+ at the current crossrates.

Blake,
Y'all are crazy. You know that don't you?
Wouldn't it be cool if we pulled it off though...

...a Buell on the finish podium in Dakar.

Lurk mode off.
Hmmmm, wake up call.
Don't want to bother my friends with al those GS stories. Just reading BWB and dreaming about my happy days in the USA.

Pete and me had some talks about the PD adventure. MAJOR € involved. We had possible 1 bigger and 1 smaller sponsor, but then we had to ride F650 BMW. Good bikes, but not our first choice. Apart from the bikes the entry fee is €10.000 pp. Spare parts, gas etc is again €7000
Total costs would be to high for the both of us so we discussed the next best option. The Australian Safari.
No you guys stir-up things again and the Paris-Dakar monster is awaken again.
I am still in training for an event like that.
hard work

The words I say, Ik word hier voor betaald
translated
I get payed to do this
No I am not having fun, this is every day hard work.

Blake,
"The BMW group??? Running a beemer through the Dakar is no special challenge."

Hi Capt. Pete,

I was thinking of filming the event. So now I am working on a cameramount for my digicamera.
The first films are hopeful.
Indeed doing the PD with a camera in 1 hand could become a small problem.
Al that dirt on the lens.

I think the best plan would be to do the Safari in 2004 in order to work all the kinks out before heading for the PD. Who knows, I might be able to come up with a helicopter as a support vehicle. Planted a little seed yesterday. Now I must carefully nurture it for a while and see what happens. It’s a long shot, but not that long.

dakar on a Buell? BAAAAA hahahahaaaa...

Whats next? SuperCross on a Busa?

Nice idea, but come on, for all the things a Buell is, it AINT a Dakar bike. Hell, even if you put a Buell engine in a GS BMW it still wouldnt be a Dakar bike.
