I want to be able to start my X1 in gear. Can i bypass what ever switch to allow starting in gear?. If so how?. I do realise its a safety thing, but i think i can handle the responsibility myself..... |

The clutch switch allows it to start if the gearbox is not in neutral. It is probably not working either because its contacts are dirty or burned out, or a wire to it is not making a good connection. That's why it doesn't start in gear. Another reason could be a defective diode in the wiring or a fault in the starter interlock wiring itself. First things first. You can remove the clutch switch and try cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner from Radio Shack or an auto parts store. There's one screw holding it in place and, I believe, you have to pull the lever in slightly to get the tang out without breaking it. Squirt the cleaner into one of the holes in the switch, work the switch several times to scrub the contacts clean and squirt it again. If you have a air compressor, blow the gunk out. If you have a multimeter, check for continuity and proper switch function; reinstall the switch. If cleaning it doesn't work then buy a new switch. |

"So they are supposed to be able to start in gear?" I think you misunderstood. You CAN NOT start the bike in gear without pulling in the clutch. The clutch "safety" switch is there to stop the bike from accidental starts when the clutch is engaged (lever not pulled in) and the bike IS NOT in neutral. So you want to be able to start the bike while in gear and clutch engaged? May I ask why? |

No, with the clutch disengaged. Sheesh. |

Kalali, what i mean't was with the clutch pulled in. The previous owner told me it would only start in Nuetral. I've just gotta find the fault so can start it in gear,With the clutch in..... All sorted, completely stripped and cleaned switch again all good now (Message edited by nallac on October 06, 2009) |

I read it the same as Mohsen did. In earlier days (i.e. when my bikes were built), there wasn't a safety switch and both my S2 and my Sportster will indeed start in gear. Only had to drop it once to learn that lesson. Well, maybe twice. |
