I'm noticing that my bike runs hotter in COOLER temps. When I ride to work (just over 10 miles) at 11 in the morning and the temperatures are in the high 80's low 90's, it runs fine, fans don't come on until I shut down the motor in the parking lot. On the way home, the temperatures are usually in the 60's. The bike gets hotter and the fan kicks in at high speed about 4-5 miles into the ride and stays on until I get home. Traffic is about the same in both directions and isn't very heavy. Also, in the cooler weather I notice more hesitation, coughing, and stalling when I blip the throttle at red lights. I went to the HD dealer and asked them to check my firmware version and was told that I have the latest one. However, my fan definitely doesn't operate the way I've read other's fans operate after the most recent update. It is NOT turning on at over 15 MPH and off when going slow. The sticker on the frame has a manufacture date of January 2009. I've been reading a bunch of stuff about ECM maps and that they're getting leaner and leaner to pass emissions standards (especially in CA). Is there a separate non-CA map or do they just use the same map for everyone? Is there a way to tell what rev. I have and get a list of revs available for my ECM? The tech got very pissy when I suggested that there IS an update and several people on Buell sites have told me that they personally have gotten an update for their '09's. The techs at the shop (which seem pretty knowledgeable, say that there's a lot of mis-information on the internet and there is no update. They also had someone test ride the bike and the tech said they couldn't reproduce any of my complaints and everything was normal. Ideally, I'd like to go in there and say "I have rev. X...I'd like Rev. Y flahsed...I'll be back in an hour" and not have to argue about it. Is this magical map that everyone is posting about intended for a different model and I have to ask for it? What am I doing wrong here? Any suggestions? Also, if anyone has a suggestion for a better H-D dealer in the L.A. area than Glendale H-D, I'd love to hear about it. The Glendale guys seem pretty competent, but if there really IS an ECM update out there and they aren't aware of it, I'd like to go to a dealer where I don't have to tell them how to fix my bike. |

Yes there is an update, it is M31US261 for the 08 & 09 and is specifically for improving operation of the fan. It was released at the same time the "Comfort Kit" was and is supposed to compliment the comfort kit. The 2010's come standard with the kit. Check out the "comfort kit" thread. husky |

Well I just talked to the service department who again insisted that there was NO update...until I pulled out the number. Then there was a lot of "uh....um....huh....uh....ummmm" followed by "I don't think we have access to that calibration...I can't download it right now...can you call back tomorrow after the system reboots?" I wonder if I'm going to have to download the damn thing myself and bring it to them on a flash drive. |

Cooler weather means denser air. More air without correction means leaner mixture. Leaner mixture means hotter cylinder temps. Hotter cylinder temps means fan comes on more. |

Blarg, Next time you go in to Glendale, see Ernie Snair in Buell sales and mention what the customer service person said to you about having to reboot the computer. IMHO they should do that frequently, like daily, to always be ready for supporting customers bikes in the shop! I think they are just giving you the run around for ? reason. They could have done that while you were there. husky |

Husky, Ernie is the guy I bought the bike from...He was great. The service guy said the system reboots ever night and he should have it the next day. Doesn't look like there were aware of this map, and didn't sound very happy that I pointed it out to them. Of course I didn't have any "real" facts to point to other than "I read it on the internet" before...but now that I have stock numbers I won't be taking any of that. If I don't get the new map before the end of the week H-D corporate will be hearing from me. (Message edited by blarg on September 25, 2009) |

just picked up the bike today with the new ECM calibration. Bike feels totally different. Not bad...just different. For one thing, I think my interactive exhaust was stuck open a few weeks ago and is now working normally - the bike is quieter than it has been. Runs much smoother too - maybe TOO smooth. Still coughs and sputters a bit when I blip the throttle though. However I noticed on ride back from the dealer that it's MUCH cooler now. I mean huge difference. I also like that the fan shuts off when I stop at intersections and doesn't sound/feel like I'm getting ready for takeoff. When I got home, I shut off the motor and there was no fan. I think that was the first time that's happened ever. Thanks for the help. I'm a much happier Bueller now. As a bonus, I was hesitant about getting a spec. ops muffler because it might be too loud for me (since I was hearing only the open exhaust) but now I'm back to thinking I will definitely be getting one...just as soon as I find a spare header to send to jet-hot so I can replace the whole exhaust at the same time and avoid downtime.
