Almost had a failure of my 06 Uly kickstand. Both bolts had worked themselves loose and were subject to stress fatigue. It was just a matter of time before the bike fell over. The kickstand recall had been performed by Biggs HD two years ago so I initially suspected lax work done by their mechanics. Then I heard that Terry Paisley at JTS had the exact same problem. I am positive he properly wrenched his bolts and yet they managed to loosen. Has anyone else experienced this problem? It is a pain in the butt because the muffler has to be removed for the job. The bolts MUST be replaced as they have reached their stress fatigue life. | ||

There is a problem with some bikes (mine) where the surfaces don't match and there is no way the bolts will stay tight. Since you have, or will have the muffler and kickstand off, machine the surface of the kickstand that mates to the engine flat. I did mine with a flat file in just a few minutes. Do the same to the engine where the kickstand bolts on to it. Use grade 8, 5/16x18 bolts with blue loktite. It worked for my '06. | ||

Had that happen this weekend as well, just north of Ft Payne Ala in Desoto park. Got off the bike and it liked to have laid down on me, front wheel was off the ground an inch or so. Managed to get an open end 3/8" wrench in there, with a buddy holding the bike. No biggie, but a roll in the gravels whilst tightening the bolts. I'm thinking the exhaust will have to be dropped to tighten the bolts properly, also intend to apply some lock-tite. That motor hits a good lick... bolts loosen, it happens. |
