just been looking on the buell website and it says the 2010 bikes have 93hp but when you look at the '09 bikes it says they've got 103hp. Is that right or has there just been a mistake? |

thats weird, the US site says 103 bhp. I wonder if the European models were detuned for emissions or something? |

The European models have a different exhaust system and different tuning, hence the lower rated output. |

Guess i made a good choice getting my '09 than waiting for the new models to come out |

I believe that the UK, and in fact all of Europe use a different standard for rating horsepower. The two may in fact be the same amount of power, just listed differently. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower |

I believe that in Europe they use the scale BHP, which is a little different than the HP scale we use. |

Hmm, I just read the Wiki and it says BHP and our SAE HP are on the same scale. However, I've seen spec sheets where both HP and BHP were listed for the same engine and they were different by a few points. |

I would bet money that the difference is due to the exhaust, if not a type. The Euro Buells have a catalyst, right? BHP is not a scale, but a reference to "older" ways of measuring HP. It stands for Brake Horsepower, and is usually measured at the crankshaft on an engine dyno, with no accessories connected. When I worked at Detroit Diesel, we measured our engines in BHP, because there were hundreds of different accessories you could choose, and you needed 1 way to rate and test the engine's power, with no accessories, and with corrections to standard temperatures, humidity and pressures. There is a thing called "metric" HP, sometimes used in Europe (mainly Germany). If you see a "PS" after the power rating instead of HP, it should be a metric number. The metric number is actually slightly higher than the "standard" HP (HP=1.01387 metric HP). The "real" way to determine the power is if a SAE method is specified. The old SAE "gross" HP was the same as BHP, but has mostly been replaced by SAE "net" power, which includes needed accessories, but is still measured at the crank. The accessories part probably doesn't matter much for most motorcycles, but can make a real difference for cars/trucsk with lots of add on items (A/C, large alternators, etc). if you want to avoid most of this confusion, you can start using Watts instead of HP! |

Did you note that the 93HP was at 5500 rpm and not at the 6800 rpm of the 103 hp rating! Husky |

Brake HP indicates the method of measurement, not the location. If not brake, then the measurement can usually be assumed to be inertial. You can measure brake HP at the rear wheel if the particular dynamometer supports it. |

Did you note that the 93HP was at 5500 rpm and not at the 6800 rpm of the 103 hp rating! That would point to a different cam. I would like to see the torque peaks also. Hmmm. |

Euro Buells do not have a catalyst. The dutch buell site also says 93hp. |
