I have an 05 Lightning City. A couple weeks ago it began to accelerate poorly. Now when it is first started the rpm's vary and it wants to stall if it doesn't get a little throttle. When its ridden it hesitates and coughs then accelerates slowly when given a decent amount of throttle and backfires heavily when you let off.
I changed the plugs a couple weeks before the problem began and changed the plug wires after it started because I thought they looked kinda ratty but didn't help the problem.
Anyone have any thoughts?}} |

Did the Check Engine Light ever come on during these episodes? If so, you should find the data connector and check for trouble codes. There are threads in the KV for checking trouble codes.
If not, check for air leaks at the intake manifold where the manifold meets the heads. Backfiring when you let off could be an indication of a lean condition. |

Wow....this problem seems very common these days...My 03 xb9r is sorta doing the same thing..(see enclosed reference to my other thread...)
In my continuing visits to BadWeb to solve my bike's running problems, I'm noticing that others are often seeing the same or at least similar symptoms.
I had thought that we had solved it on mine (see http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/488768.html?1253368219 ), but I'll add the latest development in my quest here....
So, the other day, upon hooking the bike up to the diagnostic sw (again), an error finally comes up. For whatever reason, historical errors are/were not being stored by my ECU. What did come up this time was a functional error. Using the service manual's diagnostic flow chart, the cam position sensor seems flaky. It's not consistent in it's behavior, so now we're thinking that perhaps that's why my bike's acting up.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I was riding a bit before I checked out the thread and like Rod's xb9r,it seems to really lag around 3000 rpm's.Also no error light so far and it smells pretty rich at least when its idling.
I'll definitely be getting my tools out this weekend and will check out some of the things suggested and if I get lucky I'll certainly post the results. And thanks, Rod, I'll be keeping an eye on your thread as well. |

Try new spark plugs.
Agree on the TPC reset.
Check injectors.
Spuds, Wow... A dealership that doesn't have a cam position sensor in stock? Same sensor as used for Sportsters? That's odd. |

i have 09 xb9 city and it starts funny after sitting overnight. it acts like it wants to stall with out a quick touch of the throttle. but after a few min it runs great. it only started after the 1000 mile service. where they said they loaded the newest data on the bike. it also changed how my fan operates. comes on at about 15 mph and off at 10mph. then does not come on after shut off. but runs cooler |

Try a TPS reset.
Run/kill switch to "on/run".
Turn ignition key to "on".
Rotate throttle grip from full closed to full open and back, holding light pressure at each throttle stop for at least one second, repeat three times.
Turn ignition key to "off"; turn ignition key back to "on". |

A pint of seafoam thru a couple tanks of gas this weekend and now the problem seems solved.
The guy I bought this bike from in August had warned me that it still had gas from last year in it. Although I had put a few hundred miles on it before the problem started I could see how that might gum up the fuel lines/injectors.
After reading this forum though I was amazed to learn about ecmspy and its applications. Very cool, indeed! |

thanks blake, that fixed my issue. i was not aware of how to reset the tps. or even if that was the issue. i would have thought the dealership did it at the 1000 mile service and after the loaded the 2010 data on the bike. thanks again |

you guys have been sitting in the edges of your seats waiting for the update,.....right?
The new cam position sensor finally came in.
Spent the afternoon running up and down one of the local favourite set of back roads, and then ran "into town" to meet up with some folks, then came home. It was kind of a nice day...a bit cool, but the sun was out...ok, ok....
The little xb's new cam position sensor solved the problems. Not once did it stutter, hesitate, resonate on decel; there were no mid corner engine misses, no check engine lights, no desire to stall on launch. Just a back tire that seemed 100% connected to the throttle.
Oh happy day.
Supposed to get snow flurries here this week.
