Well, my part of the journey is nearly over. I saw 4 new states, met some great people, and rode about 1500 miles. What an amazing experience. I am in the airport waiting for my flight back to NC. Jim has begun his trip back too, with a quick stop in Texas to see his kids. Thank you to everyone who greeted us with such open arms and made this trip so wonderful. | ||

Amanda and I left at 10:00 AM MDT this morning. Her in a car to the airport, and me on the bike, headed to Texas. There is a little slice of New Mexico between Colorado and Texas, and it was divine. I kept waiting to see Dr. Greg.  New Mexico has terrain that is different from the other states I've ridden in on this trip. The land is very flat, but there are very large mountains running through it. Some of them are obviously volcanic.  That isn't my picture, but I did see that volcano. There is another one on the other side of the road. It's quite stunning. There is also no one there. It's not quite as desolate as Wyoming, but it's close. I got into Texas a few hours later and the mountains disappeared, and the land became dotted with small oaks and oil wells. My original destination was Amarillo, but it was only 7:00 when I got there, so I kept going. I ended up in Lubboc, TX for the night. Tomorrow I ride to the Dallas area to visit with my kids. It's supposed to rain, so the extra 100 miles I did today, is 100 miles I don't have to ride in the rain. | ||

I think the Texicans treasure rain so don't whine. Other than that you may not have enough speed to safely make thru Dall/Fort Worth. I think the ULY tops out at 125 or so. Averaged over 100 thru the downtown back in 2001 and I was in the slow lane. Scary being passed by a dually pulling a large horse trailer in a freeway construction zone and you are running triple digits already. Rain would have definitely made it worse tho. Really glad you are having a good trip. | ||

Jim, it looks like you will be in the rain all day. Dallas is getting a lot of flash flooding. It looks to be mostly South of Dallas. Ride safe my friend. | ||

 Damp - If I had a better camera you could see the windmills better. The cloud cover was low, so only the lower blades were visible, the upper one disappeared into a bank of fog. (Message edited by jlnance on September 16, 2009) | ||

The old Buell Puck gloves did that as well, I have two sets that were worn through by just the grip (no accidents or anything). I'd get about 10k miles out of a pair. You want pictures of those as well? Too bad, I really liked the gloves, great feel and great fit and nice looking, and a fair price at a little under $50. I couldn't afford to keep replacing them after the second (maybe third, I can't remember) set wore through, so I switched brands. | ||

 Memphis - I stayed in Memphis with Xeraux from Advrider.com. He took me out and showed off some of the town. We ate dinner at a place called Gus's which serves fried chicken. He promised me it would be the best chicken I had ever had, and he was right. He was a very gracious host. It was a good visit. (Message edited by jlnance on September 16, 2009) | ||

 Hickory, nc - Yesterday I just wanted to get home. Tennessee is along state. I started out in Memphis, and by the early afternoon I was in Knoxville. The depressing part of that is Knoxville is only half way home, and I'd already put 350 miles on the bike. I fought with rain most of the day, but it was reasonably clear after Knoxville. I got into NC after 451 miles of TN. Had some dinner in Asheville, stayed off the bike for a while, and knocked out the remaining 250 miles to get home.
