Not a heavy subject, but... When shopping for gloves, how do you determine a "good" fit? I have a feel for footwear, but proper glove fitment eludes me. Do you go snug and break 'em in? Or do you buy gloves that slide on easily with room to spare? -Don | ||

My advice would be to buy real snug. Maybe even a size smaller than what you would usually wear depending on the fit. Leather gloves especially tend to stretch a good bit over time. I've made that mistake twice and after the break-in ended up with baggy, sloppy feeling gloves. From now on I buy tight. | ||

Glove size depends on what (quality) gloves you buy. I've the last 5 years bought high-end Held gloves with Kangaroo leather, and they need to fit closely first time you put them on. They don't stretch much at all. Glove fit is quite a dilemma. Too tight, and you'll be hurting; too loose, and you loose throttle/lever feel. Henrik (not much help, I relalize) | ||

The majority of gloves these days, performace and touring, have precurved fingers, so stretching lengthwise isn't an issue like it is with the circumference around the hand. I like a little looseless in the fingertips for better circulation and frostbite prevention. Performance gloves should be snug fitting. If they move around on you, when you crash, the glove can grab pavement and come off or at a minimum roll around your hand so that wonderfully thick patch on the palm and bottom of the fingers isn't where you want it when you need it. You can feel the knuckle/finger armor more thru a tighter fitting glove too. Not uncomfortable to me, but maybe to others. A sloppy fitting glove can also affect your control on the bars because your hand is moving around inside the glove, more likely with a touring glove than a performance glove. Make sure the gauntlet will fit over your leather jacket's cuffs. Small gaunltlets that you have to force the straps around the cuff to keep closed can cause wrist discomfort. Touring gloves, the insulated type anyway, can't fit as firm or the insulation won't loft as intended. Usually the strap on the gauntlet gets the task of keeping the glove on. The guaunlets are typically larger for fitting over bulkier touring jackets and to better keep out the elements. Much like helmets, it seems the true sizes of S, M and L vary between manufacturers. I have three pairs, Joe Rockets, Teknics and Alpinestars. The Rockets and the Teknics are full leather guantlets with armour while the Alpinestars are synthetic with heavily padded leather palms and fingers. The Alpinestars are by far the best fitting and the most comfortable and they were the cheapest. Anyways on most days I grab the Alpinestars. Pay close attention to the seams inside the fingers, The Rockets and the Teknics seam to have bulky interior seams with little padding in the palms(ie.padded palm=comfort). Rob | ||

Gloves...my take, Gloves are about as personal as you can get when choosing gear. Try on many pairs/types and go with what has best feel while still providing strong protection. I would never buy a pair of gloves I couldn't put on first, like mail order or over the internet. I like my gloves to fit well from the day I buy them. Not tight, not loose. Slightly snug is ok. My favorites right now are a pair made by Held. They have good construction and are by far the most comfortable, best fitting gloves I have ever owned. They are also my most expensive pair, but I don't mind paying for quality that endures. Timbo | ||

Long story.....but I left it in rain soaked gear bag after a toad strangler (I highly recommend Bach Tocato's for listening esconsed in a fog laden helmet during level 5 thunderstorms) and flat frickin' forgot it. Bought two new pair of Held's (which I still intend to break in) and found my "well suited to my hands" pair about a year later. My first pair of Helds were sacrificed in a little incident when an M2 and I parted company when I was pushed by Ferris Bueller.  <<not really...he just does guilt so well >> Anyway...that glove and I reached the same point in our lives at the same time...weird or what? RIDDLE OF THE DAY: How would you feel if you'd were told, in New York City mind you, "your qualifications are extraordinary, but with that hick accent I just don't think you'd fit in...." The terms "going postal" register? | ||

Uhh Court, I can understand your affection for your Held gloves. I can *somewhat* understand neglecting them in a soggy wet gear bag. I can NOT understand keeping them in THAT condition.  Unless of course, you fear having to duke it out with some bum after discovering him wearing them. Having fished them out of your famous dumpster. "HEY...Those are MY gloves...Give 'em baaaack....." I have a collection of the brake rotors that were tried and dismissed for various reasons for the S-1....the various iterations of the housing for the M-2 tach kits...and all the owners group crapola from 1988. I've an unbroken case of sales literature, the "shoulda been propular" S-2 Touring Catalog....etc. Oh year...and the one thing I am kinda glad I saved...when the engineering group devised the frame for the S1, on about 1995, I had them plot it out for me and had everyone from Bret Schaller, Marty Brown, Abe Askenaszi and Erik Buell sign it..... I many never clean house....but, you can HAVE the gloves. In honor of you, they'll be in tomorrows garbage Court "Hick" is not one of the "protected classes" under Title IX. | ||
