My 06 still has the original plugs, belt and wheel bearings plus some really bald syncs so I decided I needed to do some prepping for the run to Buelltoberfest. I ordered parts from American Sportbike and I already had some new Metzeler Z6 roadtecs waiting. This morning I changed the plugs. I bought the NGK Iridium's. I knew this job is a tough one as per many post here. What I found was that the hardest part is getting the plug wires back on! The front plug is of course a no brainer, 5/8" box end, done deal. The rear is the one that's the problem however using a magnetic plug socket, (My only purchase from Snaponium), a universal joint and long extension it was simple! It came right out. I put some anti-seize on the threads and used the 3/8" fuel hose trick to get it started. Took about four tries but it started fairly easily. Once again getting the plug wire to SNAP into position was the hardest part. I'm hoping the new plugs will help with the slow cruising speeds. I was going to put the airbox back on but was looking at the ground strap across the rear engine mount. I think I'll run up to the parts store and see if I can get a ground wire long enough to get from the battery to the engine. Might get rid of the dreaded starter lag. Anybody done that yet? | ||

Yes. I ran a wire from batt neg directly to a through bolt on the starter. It didn't fix my problem but it can't hurt anything. It turned out to be a weak battery. | ||

I had the lagging starter on my 06 (made in 05). Did all the usual suspects of grounds and terminals. I replaced the battery and the starter was singing again. Batts do go south but I'd say 4 years old and 53,000 miles, 2 VR's and 1 stator, it's a darn good battery the HD guys use. Make sure you get a glass matt battery with 200CCA minimum. I tried a cheap auotozone one and it didn't have the gusto to turn the beast, so I put it in the kids electric 4 wheeler. | ||

Well I put it on and it didn't help but it was easy and now know I'm getting a good ground. I'm using a PC454 Odyssey dry cell which I've had great luck with. The only thing is that this particular battery sat for a year on the bench because I thought my stock one was going out but it just kept going and going. It wasn't very strong but it would start the bike. I finally modified the battery box to fit the Odyssey and put it in. It was showing 12.78 volts when I put it in and they are known for their shelf life. I did trickle charge it once in a while. I'm not too worried, it starts just fine, just wanted to make sure I didn't have a ground problem. I'm thinking the charging system doesn't put out enough juice to fully charge a dry cell, I know they love high amps when charging. I just got the rear wheel and belt off. Belt has some minor cracking at the base of the teeth. It will make the perfect spare! The original bearings were still good but they were getting rusty on the edges which will eventually screw up the seal. I was surprised at how big the axle is. I'm use to my Harley! After all this time this is the first time I'm changing the tires. I've always been on the road when I needed one. I have to fabricate an insertion tool for the bearings and it's rather busy at work so hopefully I'll get some time for a little government work this week. Well today was a good day. First job was a no brainer so plenty of time to make tools. Had to make two of them since the front wheel bearings are smaller. Got home and installed the rear wheel bearings. Installed rotor side first till the OD hit the wheel. Put spacer in and pulled the pulley side bearing in till it hit the spacer. I did all this without removing the pulley or rotor. There is no need to do so, the book is wrong. A waste of time and new hardware IMHO. Tomorrow I must join friends in tasting some New Belgium La Folie. There will be no work after work tomorrow!  | ||

Well I got the tires mounted and the belt on, finally, and have been riding to work all week. I love the Metzeler Interacts, they do stick. The belt on the other hand is as tight as a banjo string. It's really singing. I really don't like this at all and don't remember my original belt ever being that tight. Do they usually stretch out a little? It can't be good on bearings. |
