So it was time for the 6200 mile service. Went to the local shop and grabbed a filter kit and 3 quarts of Syn3. Put the bike on a rear stand and began. I heeded all of the warnings about the left drain plug and didn't dribble. The right one poured quite a bit of oil too. It was the darn filter that got me. Once the 2nd bolt was free it shot out getting oil all over. Live and learn. I measured what came out: ~3.2 quarts. I put in the required 2.7 from the service manual. I parked it over night. This morning before the ride to work I checked the level and it didn't even show on the dipstick. What is going on? ac |

Cold check will always show lower than a hot check. I quit worrying about it a while back. I emptied 3 qt bottles with a fresh filter and figure enough stays in the bottle to be the right amount. Give it a proper hot check, it takes near a half hour, if you don't do it at the end of a ride. 10 minutes if you do. Never seen any oil in my airbox. 21.5k miles and a Very happy motor. Z |

Same as Zac here, I went through the 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 etc. and saw nothing. I put the 3 quarts in and it reads right when hot most of the time. |

Avc, I changed mine pulled the muffler and checked the screen let it sit overnight to get all the oil out. I put 3 full qts in and it still barley shows on the new recall stick. That has been about 1500 miles ago. I wonder sometimes if I should add a little but haven't. Scott |

What is the "warning about the left drain plug"? I changed my oil at 620 miles, and I left it on the side stand. for the left plug, then put it in a sport chock to do the right plug. I had no issues other than getting some oil in the sidestand pivot and some dripping on the muffler. Both wiped up. The filter is amazingly easy to change. What is the "screen" that needs cleaning?? I didn't do that. I just cleaned the metallic gunk off the drain plug. |

Chad - The oil pump pick-up tube has a screen that the muffler hides. IIRC it's round, 3-4" across, center of the motor. When the motor is warm, the oil shoots out the left plug hole about 2', then rapidly moves in towards the bike. Makes the drain pan a moving target. It can get messy quick. I do mine on a rear stand with the kickstand up. Zack |

Ah...well, I did mine on the side stand with the drain pan right underneath. I remember it did come out with some force at first, but it shot right into the pan. Any suggestions as to how often to clean that screen? |

Chad, the manual indicates check at the second oil change or at least thats what I recall. I checked mine on the first oil change to see how much metal it trapped. There was a little, not much. It did its job. Me I will do it with every oil change simply to keep it clean. It might be more than necessary, but piece of mind for me. Scott |

Avc, are you checking the oil level (hot and cold) with the bike on a stand. That will give you a false level. The bike HAS to be absolutely level and vertical to get an accurate reading. Other Rotax motors (incl the checks on their aero engines) I've dealt with in the past have been tricky like this too. |

I am checking the level by standing over the bike. I reach down and pull the dip stick, wipe it off, screw it back in, unscrew and read level. I added another 4oz. I am now at 2 quarts, 28 ounces. Still no ready on the stick. ac |

I've got the new dip stick on mine and it took 3.25qt approximately. I put 3 in then added little by little until it was at the full mark. My owners manual says 3qt with filter change. |

I am also using the new dipstick. Like I said, 3.25 quarts is what came out. All 3 quarts are in now. I don't have a 4th to dabble into yet. ac (Message edited by avc8130 on September 03, 2009) |

I put three quarts in mine, and the oil level as at the bottom of the dipstick when cold. According to the cold check procedure in the manual, if any oil is showing on the stick when cold, you're fine. |

I've never worried about being a paltry half quart low. But that's one reason I run synthetic too, for the extra margin wrt heat resistance and durability of the oil. And it seems supremely logical to me that if your oil level was correct and then you drain x-amount of oil from the engine including filter change, then you should put that exact same x-amount back. D'uh? Am I missing something? Come on people. |

D'uh? Am I missing something? Seriously, who measures the oil when they drain it? I just put the prescribed amount in that's called for. All I know, it was almost a quart over when new. When the dipstick was changed they should have moved the full line down so that it registered full at the max. amount on the cold check. Then there would be no question whether it was full or not, it'd be right there to see and would be much easier to keep it in the operating range. |

When I changed my for the first time last week , I put exactly 2.7qts mobil 1 in . The bike was noticeably louder, but I expected that because of the syn . I did the hot check on two occasions and it barely touched the stick both times so I added 240mL . The motor got quieter so I thought it must have needed the extra oil, but on the last hot check it is touching the overfill line, which means I need to drain 240ml? NOW WHAT? it sounds better , but am I hurting anything? |

If there's no oil in the airbox , you're GOOD. At LEAST 3 qts, call it a day. Z |

My bike seems happy with 3 quarts of Syn3 in it. I am forgetting about it now. Checking the oil is a pain, so if I don't see any leaking I ain't touching it! LOL ac |
