well i was riding the the auto parts store to pick up my new plugs and the bike was acting funny, sputtering a bit and idling bad at the stop light. thought it was a bit odd as was fine earlier. then it died at the next light. started back up and got to the store. on the way back it barely made it through the light and then died. started back up and made it almost to a gas station (thought it would might be low) but it died again and wouldn't start. couldn't hear the fuel pump turn on. checked the wiring and everything was fine. i was in front of a guys house and asked him if he had a gas can or some gas. he had a bit left from his lawnmower and let me have it. poured it in, and heard the pump kick on! i thanked him and took off the the gas station up the block. anyway, long story for the question  no low fuel light, and i don't think i went the normal amount of miles (had to disco the battery and lost the odometer reading) checked the bulb and it seems to work. did i miss something? what does it mean on the X1 files page about not running out of gas? Ride the motorcycle in closed loop operation (2500-3500 rpm, approximately 40-60 m.p.h. in 4th or 5th gear with engine under load) consistently for 2-3 minutes. This allows the ECM to learn a new Adaptive Fuel Value (AFV). thanks nate | ||

It means, as you ran out gas it learned a new very very rich fuel curve. Throwing the correct AFV, it had learned in the past, out the window! So now you need to teach it the correct one all over again. As for the low fuel light. It is a 'general' feeling buy many of us that they are just not trustworthy. If you find the "BIG FIX" for it let us all know. | ||

It will take about 2 miles at 80 stop sputtering and to get all the air out! The HD guys tried to say it would not start again due to what drhaknstine stated. But it is not true! the Hd tech's are fools! | ||

It raised the AFV on my bike.(I know the AFV of my bike ran about 105 before I ran out. Checked it two blocks after refill AFV 125.) But, no it will start and run ok. Not as well as before, but that corrects itself, just about as fast as it mucked it up. And Yes, I just reset it to 100 while I was in there. (Message edited by Drhacknstine on September 03, 2009) |
