I'm beginning to think instead of an XB12XT I should've gotten another tuber. Evidence: My rear wheel bearing history on the XB12XT, plus a belt failure for good measure. Of course I may be a little grumpy because the latest failure happened today and I'm planning on leaving Thursday after work headed for NJMP, 1313 |

That is pretty ridiculous. I assume the added weight of the bags is the straw that breaks the camels back? Firebolts and such dont seem to have this issue as much as the uly. None if this is really all that helpful is it... Good luck getting it back together quickly. |

Checking your profile I see your XT is a 2008. Are these failures covered under warranty? Also, thought I read the 09 model comes with improved wheel bearings and a stronger lifetime warrantied belt. Correct me if I'm wrong but hoping I'm right since I just bought an 09 XT! (Message edited by bcmike on August 31, 2009) |

My 12r lasted 40k miles before before the motor went. And three shift drums. |

Bcmike - His Uly had been upgraded to the new 09 bearings. He may have been the first to have one fail. As to the belt, it is upgraded about once a year. The fix for the wheel bearing problems should be the 2010 wheel, which was significantly redesigned with 3 larger bearings and dust covers. |

1313- According to your post: new black seal RWB at 11407 miles new black seal RWB at 15632 miles failed RWB at 24301 miles Have all the bearing changes been the result of failures, or were the previous replacements intended to be preventative? If you haven't seen it already, see this post by Al Lighton on bearing installation including some important tolerances: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=142838&post=1505281#POST1505281 If you originally went to black seal bearings because of an orange seal bearing failure, I'm thinking you've got a spacer or wheel problem that's causing the subsequent bearings to fail. |

Hugh, All wheel bearing replacement activities have been due to failures, albeit none as interesting as the latest. The 1st set of black sealed wheel bearings that failed had to have been put in wrong by the dealer - I got the same mileage (just over 4,000) out of that rear tire and it's the lowest mileage I've gotten out of a rear on this bike so the bearings had to have contributed. I think you're missing a key data point with my latest black sealed wheel bearing failure - just 264 miles before bearing failure the OE belt (.AKD) was replaced with the .AKE belt. The same dealership (can't say if the same technician, however) has done all the bearing replacements, but right now it's at a different dealer - out of convenience due to where and when the failure occured (Sunday afternoon). HOORAY!!! I just got a phone call from the dealership where the bike is with some interesting news. My rear wheel will get replaced with the upgraded 2010 (tri-bearing) rear wheel! I sure hope this is the end of the rear wheel bearing issues that I've experienced with the XB12XT. And I'll still be able to make the trip to NJMP this weekend to see Eslick take the Daytona Sportbike chamiponship (my prediction)! 1313 P.S. M2nc picked me up Sunday afternoon and delivered the bike to the dealership and me home. He posed the question why some Uly's have problems and some don't. He's got 45K on his '06 Uly and has never had any rear wheel bearing issues. Honestly, I wish mine was one of those without any failures, but hopefully the three bearing rear wheel will eliminate premature rear wheel bearing failures from happening again. |

I sure hope this is the end of the rear wheel bearing issues that I've experienced with the XB12XT. Wow! That's awesome. I figured you'd be a prime candidate for the upgrade anyway; it's very impressive that they're doing it for you. It is weird how some high mileage bikes have had zero bearing problems while others seem to be bearing "eaters". That sure seems to go along with Al's info regarding tolerances. I can imagine some bikes had tolerance stacking issues and some didn't. Other bikes may have had acceptable tolerances, but then suffered wheel bearing failures due to water or debris intrusion which then led to spacer distortion or damage either during the failure or subsequent bearing replacement, which would lead to repeat bearing failures. My 07 Uly has a little over 20k. I replaced the original NTN bearings (which felt rough) at 8k miles with Koyo's and they're still doing fine (knock on wood). I've got a spare set of KBC's on standby though. |

My rear bearing just went at 2600 miles... I heard from a friend that they knew about this problem and the '10's have double bearings or something... 2600! FAIL That and I lost ALL lights at 600 miles... Danbury Harley said it was 4 lost grounds... now I lost my directionals, but they couldn't see me this week... now this! |
