hi all, i saw this website, & thought someone might be able to help. :> i recently replaced the battery on my '95 s2 w/37k miles, the old one being dead. since the bike hadn't seen much use lately, and the battery was a few years old, (tho connected to a tender over the winter), i figured it was shot, so i replaced it. two weeks after replacement, the new one was dead. i jumped it & rode to work yesterday (45 miles), figuring the ride would charge it. i was wrong - even deader when i got to work than it was, before i left. hmmm - not charging, when i thought my new cheapo battery must be the culprit. (~$45, old-style fill-it-w/water-type.) when i got home, i checked woltage at idle - 8.4v. at 3k rmp, it went up to only 9.6v. so - voltage regulator? alternator? or? thanks, doug s. |

I would replace the VR at the same time. Chances are a bad stator took it out too. |

Best to get a manual and it will tell you how to test it. I did it myself and found a bad stator on my 2002 M2 (after about 12,000 miles). Did the replacement myself and was good to go in an afternoon. |

Phelan is correct but like Koz said check them according to the service manual. If your local parts place does not have one try here: http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/17088.html And when you get done take a look in the S2 section of this site. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/315330.html?1249658702 Welcome to the BadWeb. Test each stator lead to ground for continuity. A good stator will show no continuity...infinite ohms. If it shows continuity the stator has shorted to ground, which means replace it. If continuity checks out then check resistance between stator leads. Should measure between .2 -.4 ohms. If lower then stator is damaged...again replace. If that checks out then check output AC voltage at the stator leads while bike is running. Should measure 38-52 volts AC at 2000rpm. If that fails again stator or rotor. If passes look at the Voltage Regulator. (Message edited by gowindward on August 27, 2009) |

Once you try to ride with either a bad battery/VR/stator... it usually takes the others out. I would replace all three (good chance you ran the battery down so far it can't be saved either). Welcome to BadWeb and the Buell community! if you don't mind hanging out in the garage every now and then to fix a few things, these bikes are worth all the bloody knuckles and cus words! get it fixed and go out and ride before it gets too cold! |

On a side note, now is a great time to upgrade your charging system! Using the XB parts and changing a couple plugs will upgrade your charging system from the stock 22 amps to 30 amps. Loren (gowindward) did it on his; I'll see if I can find the link. |

Phelan, upgrading the system to xb would be great, if an easy swap. let me know wazzup w/this before i order any parts! thanks, doug s. |

The upgrade is nice if you're working on the system anyway. My bike, though, hasn't had an issue with the stock setup - 95 S2, GPS, PIAA aux lights, heated gear, voltmeter. I do discharge at idle with everything on....but it comes right back up once I top about 2200rpm |

I did it for riding two up with heated gear on. |

If you used a GL-5 gear oil in the tranny or don't know what lubricant was used then drain it before putting in a new stator. All but one GL-5 oils that I know of will corrode the stator. GL-5 gear oil is NOT recommended for use. GL-4 gear oil is okay - but do check with the manufacturer first to confirm on their recommendations. |

I'll let Doug take care of that, he's got the receipt...but from what I gathered, it was the stator. Joe (the 'other' one) had it on his bench when I came through and there were multiple pieces of magnet laying around. Looks like the ol' girl just gave up. I don't know if the VR needed replacing or not...again, I defer to Doug and his receipt |

I just fixed this problem on my S2 this weekend. You will need a multi meter. Find the lead coming from the stator to the voltage reg. Unhook it from the voltage reg. Take your multi meter set to it's highest ohm setting and place the - lead on bear metal on the motor somewhere. Then take the + and go to each of the 2 pins (one at a time) on the wire coming up from the stator and see if you get a reading of any kind. If you do then that is a dead short and the stator is bad. If that comes out fine then set the meter to 20k ohm and take a reading across both pins (+ on one pin and - on the other) and you should get a reading of .2 to .4 ohms. If this is what you see the stator is good. If you get one lower then the stator is shorted to it's self and is bad. Mine came back at .5 and it was fine. I then changed out my voltage reg and the problem was taken care of. You should see at the battery on a good charging system 12.5 ish volts when not running and 13.3 to 13.8 at 1,000 RPM. It will climb to around 14.5 ish at higher RPM. I hope this helps. I got it out of my brother in laws S1 manual. As the charging system is the same it works fine. Good Luck. |
