as much as i like the ride on a friends ULY last night, i felt uncomfortable with the height of the bike & the limited steering lock. i felt like i was on the verge of falling in a friends back yard turnaround. i currently own a bmw r1100gs & am wanting something to fire me back up. is it worth considering economically or logistically, the possibility of installing a later front end & a shorter rear shock to overcome these two uncomfortable features for me? perhaps i should look at a lightning long??? thanks dean |

Test ride a Uly XB12XT. It has the Uly looks and ergos with the Lightning Long's suspenders (for all intents and purposes, I'm not sure they are exactly the same). You will not get the increased steering lock though. |

Its closer to the XB12STT than the 06-08 SS. (09+ SS uses the old STT suspension) Anyway, there are several seats available for the bike, so that is the cheapest route to make adjustments to the height should you see fit. |

i sure would like the tighter turning radius...has anyone done it yet? swap out to a later front end? dean |

Yes do a search on here, you can change the trees and modify the ignition lock a bit. It will skew your steering geometry slightly, but will be fine. |

the wife & i went out together on the 06 Ulysses X last night & had an enjoyable ride, but a few things make us more suited to be T owners. too tall for me. she is nicely sprung on both ends with a nice WILBERS on the back. I wish i could trade it for someones NICE factory or aftermarket T shock... it has the pretty,but loud factory race pipe. debra likes it - i want something less noisy suggestions??? i would like bar risers & a decent airpocket windscreen - ideas there??? we need luggage - just need to be patient shoppers i guess! debra says the stock saddle makes it feel as though she is tilted forward too much - i like my half other than aforementioned height issues with my 31" inseam. i can get used to the steering lock or change it later... trying to figure out what to do next : ) dean |

I think you would really like the newer lower version of the bike. The "XT" with the wider steering lock. I have the same criticisms of my uly. But my used 06 was a lot cheaper than a new XT. I still love my X. The only time I notice the steering lock is in my back yard or trying to do a 36 point turn in a small garage. Im short for a uly rider, 30 inch inseam, but I love the tall seat. I grew up tip-toeing on dirt bikes, so I don't mind it too much. When Mrs. Barker gets on I drop the kick and let her get on from the low side. Call Jeremy aka Fat Bastard @ Bumpus HD in Murfreesboro for a demo ride on the XT. I will buy that noisy pipe from you dean. I have a extra stock pipe, no rust, that should fit it. |

go with the xt. being 5'8, it is a great handling bike with or without the wife. the luggage is a great plus. i got the palmer brackets with a taller windscreen than comes stock with the xt. i had to take the windscreen off all together just to get away from the turbulence noise from an xt or x windscreen. |

"i would like bar risers & a decent airpocket windscreen - ideas there???" The windscreen is the area that the Uly really lacks. For me it is wind noise more than anything else. I have tried 3 different screens and adjustable brackets with no success. Trying to find the right solution is a $200 experiment. Really wish Buell come up with a factory option that worked. At least we could try it. Advantages of the wind noise is that the weird noises that the motor makes or the noisy fan are not a problem. There will be those that disagree, but there are 100's of posts on finding a good solution. Like the rest of the bike well enough that I keep riding it with over 24k on the clock. |
