Illinois Liquor Taxes - Highest in the Nation next month! http://thinkingofdrinking.blogspot.com/2009/08/ill inois-liquor-taxes-highest-in-nation.html Top Ten States Here's the ranking by state liquor tax rates. 1. Illinois, as of 9/1/09 - $8.55 per gallon 2. Florida - $6.50 3. New York - $6.43 4. Hawaii - $5.98 5. New Mexico - $5.68 6. Alaska - $5.60 7. Minnesota - $5.03 8. Oklahoma - $4.56 9. Connecticut - $4.50 (Illinois would have been tied for 8th before) 10. New Jersey - $4.40 Can anyone suggest a sipping tequila? Have been a bourbon man for a long time, but since my appendix was removed can't stomach the stuff. Really. When I had my gallbladder removed 10 years ago I could not drink beer for 6 months. Odd. |

Since the state of Oregon owns all the liquor stores we'll more than match your taxes. Since this is from Illinois I guess this is change we can believe in. Thought so |

The consumer has control over the price- low demand=low price. Maybe this is a good time to seriously cut back, or better yet, get off the juice altogether. |

"find a friend in the military. there are not taxes on base" Ah, the package store. A really good tequila IMO is Herradura Anejo. Aged two years in oak. It is amazing, and only about $40 a fifth. For reference, a reposado tequila is only aged a couple of months, and regular tequilas aren't aged at all. |

Cuervo Especiale has always been good for me...I don't think of it as a sipping liquor though...straight up as a shot very very chilled. |

You southern folk are putting mash in the stills even as you read this aren't you? I just read the other day where it is legal's for one to brew your own up to 100 gallons a year per person, or 200 gallons per household... |

Hoot- gotta correct youn's a little. ALWAYS look for "100% agave" on the label. Don't waste your time on anything else for sipping/shots. If you're making mixed drinks, still spend a little for quality. Plata: clear, "silver" tequila, aged very little, showcases the essence of distilled agave. Anejo: Aged in wood a few months up to 2 years, I think- this begins to bring a mellow taste and a light molasses tint through the tequila. Reposado: "In repose", aged 2 years up to 6 I think, darker brown, definitely shows wood in aging, much like KY single barrel bourbons. Do your own tastings- all you need are some of those 50ml airplane bottles, most of the best tequilas come in that size. My faves: Patron Silver by a longshot, Herradura, Don Pablo (IIRC). Or, just wait and see if the Beer Fairy shows this fall at TWO... Vodka- Luksusowa (SP?) Polish potato vodka. Best bottle cost (about the same as Absolut), smooth enough to make a superb Gimlet or Martini. RIP "Popcorn" Sutton... |

The mash is good. A sturdy Samogon from pototoe and Yam will make everything ok. A nice crisp recipe from my friend in St. Petersburg is my fav, though the family recipe with watermelon and blackberry knocks back pretty good too. (the revenuers usually nail you when you go to town for sugar) |

Squids... Hurradera is 100% agave, no other sugar sources. Read the label on a $50 bottle of reposado. Months. Anejo is 1 year to 3 years in oak. Reposado is a minimum of two months but less than a year. Regardless....Herradura Anejo is hands down the best tequila I've ever had, and I've had more expensive ones. |

Hey Hoot- whoops, I've forgotten stuff. Been several years since I worked managing a liquor store, so I called my old boss just now. Plata/Blanco: no aging. Reposado: no more than 364 days. Anejo: Anything over a year. Many of the good ones can be overlooked- much of it is obscured by marketing/labeling efforts of dominant brands. Go talk with your favorite liquor/wine shop proprietor. Get them airplane bottles, they're pretty handy to have around, pack well for travel, cheep. |

I can put a bottle of Milagro silver up against any high end tequila and you'll enjoy every drop. I have a pretty large customer base that loves Milagro and I carry much more higher end brands. But hands down I out sell all of them with it. |

Pepe Lopez! Best sipped from a flat bottle with the paper bag still wrapped around it. |

Cuervo Gold was my poison of choice, but it has been over 15 years since I put the bottle down. Never sipped it, just drank it. Lick, suck, drink. Or tip the bottle and lug lug lug 1/2 of it. Then fire one up. Done for the evening. Nope, I don't miss it. |
