The dealer put a bit to much oil in my XB12 after rebuilding the top end, I wasnt concered because if it burned any that would just mean I wouldnt need to buy another quart (switching back to Amsoil after 1000 miles anyways). But then I was talking to someone about it today at class and they mentioned that having to much oil can cause seals to fail. Is this a concern with the dry sump? |

And is that harmful? I plan to check the intake before my 400 mile ride to Yosemite on Saturday, Ill probably buy a turkey baster from work before hand and suck some out from the dip stick hole (easier then draining it) before the long ride, just for peace of mind. |

If it were me. I'd drain the oil, and put in a fresh 2 quarts, skipping the oil filter replacement. Then go the 1000 miles and go with your preferred oil. my 2¢ |

What is your reasoning? I could possibly do that but I am SUPER busy until Saturday, when I am leaving early AM for the 400 mile ride. Could do the change after that though (600 miles on bike since rebuild). |

My dealership overfilled my bike in last service, I just sucked extra oil out with syringe until oil level was on high mark... That's it. I cannot see any reason to drain the rest of the oil. About oil changes after rebuild, I think I would change oil after first 100 miles, then oil + filter in 500 miles and once more in 1000 mile mark. Dino oil until 1000 miles, synthetic after that. I think I read that from some old S&S break-in instructions... (Message edited by Samppa on August 27, 2009) |

The turkey baster or syringe methods of excess oil extraction sound great to me! With the new sub 10 micron filters, I don't see any justification for changing the oil other than according to the owner's manual. You are talking about particles smaller than 0.000010". The film thickness of the oil is a heck of a lot thicker than that! |

I would do it cause it takes as much time as writing this post and I'd have piece of mind thats really all there is to it.I'd also rip the dealer a little as it is a new top end and if they can't get oil right I would be a little worried ya know |

Hahahaha... I have the time to change the oil but not the time to buy any. School is followed right by work, then Saturday I leave at 7am for a 400 mile trip. I bought a turkey baster at work, just going to take some out. Thanks anyways for your advice guys. |

just set the level and do the break in/ring seat as per the dealer told u.if it blows up and u followed any suggestion but theirs u are out of luck. do this till they are seated and no more using oil and the compression is good between both cylinders. then do your oil changes as u wish |
