Does the fan run at the same rpm's all the time. Mine seams to run at varrying speeds.

Mine sounds to have a high and a low speed. Usually high is only while the bike is running, or the ten seconds or so after the bike is turned off, the rest of the time it sounds like it is running at a lower speed. 08 bike FTR.

If you are getting any more than two speeds...then you fan is getting ready to fail. Have it replaced soon. Mine started failing around 10,000 miles but it wasn't until 12,000 that it finally failed enough for the dealer to replace it. Over 25,000 miles with the replacement fan with no issues.

+1 both of the above. Fan failed at 19,000 and also had multiple speeds just before failure. New fan and original when new had two speeds. 06 Uly.
Maximum-I just put new fan in 06. Is this an upgrade from original?

I took my fan out when it failed and drove it for 10,000 miles and left the hole empty. This allowed more air to flow through the empty hole which is huge with the fan gone. I didn't do much city driving or sitting at stop lights so it was never a heat issue. Never hit spark skip or develop a knock. Don't be afraid to ride if the fan fails. Rip it out and ride. It is a PITA to do on the side road but you can do it.
I did check eng temps with and with out the fan in with ECM spy. The fan out ran cooler than the broke fan in place. it still ran cooler than the fan in and operational as long as I was moving faster than 25MPH.

Mine failed in N.Y and rode with the CEL on for a day. Oil looked good and I never got into skip mode either. The bigest Pain In the A** was the very short wire that powers the fan. the rest was just scut work in replacing.

From what I've read, the new fans use proper grease. The original grease was not up to the task.

Is there a new fan with a different part number vs the 06 fan??

With the comfort kit scoop the fan hardly runs anyway.

the fan does have two speeds. I have noticed that after shut down, it does run on high at first then after a minute or two it switches to low. Then when I turn off the ignition the speed increases slightly do to the fact that the head light, ignition, fuel pump ect. is no longer drawing more amps. If this sounds familiar then don't worry.

Thank you all for your responses. I ordered the rider comfort kit and wanted to make sure about the fans speeds.

Rotorhead,

A couple of questions with the fan removed:

1. Does the computer toss out an error code?
2. On hot days (95F+), did you have any restart problems after refueling?
3. Do you have a BBWU (Before Buell Woke Up) right side air scoop installed?

Like you, I do not ride in traffic. Since installing my BBWU RSS two years ago, my fan usually runs only at shut down. From your ECM spy tests and my observations, I believe that the fan justifies its existence by restricting air flow to the rear cylinder. (The computer sees the hot rear cylinder and turns on the fan. Therefore, I must need the fan.)

I plan to buy the "Comfort Kit" this fall to get the under seat shroud. Since I will have this area torn apart, I may remove the fan.

Thanks,

Still have original 06 fan with over 21000 miles on it.

I wonder if that fan ran all the time a 3rd speed, low, if the higher speed fan settings would never be necessary. With the BBAC RSS installed that is. BBAC is Before Buell Ate Crow.
How about BBSS. Before Buell Swallowed Sh.
Hey, I used to stick up for them, many times, in regards to whether that RSS was necessary. Apparently it was and is and I'm tasting a bit of it myself.

I don't see the reason for any RSS. I have yet to see my oil temp go over 190 degrees. If the oil isn't too hot the engine won't be either. I had to ride 95 100 mph 2 up for an hour to get the temps that hot. Maybe the newer models are running even a leaner hotter mixtures for emissions purpose and needed the new RSS but for my 06 it would be totally a waste of $ IMHO.

Matt- I'm not sure there is a new P/N for the fan, but it seems as if there ought to be. The early 06 Ulys had a lot of fan failures. One enterprising Badwebber (a mechanical engineer with a bearing background) bought a fan off ebay and disassembled it. He also obtained observed exhaust air temperature data from someone's Uly. He concluded that the grease used in the bearings and the seal material used in the bearings would eventually break down in the temperatures the fan sees. Suitable off-the-shelf bearings and grease were available, it would just be very difficult for an owner to retrofit his fan with them due to way the bearings are installed and the fan is put together.

When fan failures started tapering off with the 07 models, I think we all concluded Buell had figured this out too and had specified new fans with upgraded bearings. I guess it's possible they didn't even change the part number.

Maybe Froggy can confirm one way or the other?

Y0050.02A8A is the cooling fan. The A means it is revised in some way, but I couldn't say how. It is possible its just a different vendor. This part number is several years old, its not like they changed the thing recently.

Oh, and technically the fan is infinity speeds, there is not gear rations or junk. The fan will spin faster or slower depending on the voltage. You could keep juicing it up till it self destructs.

I'm pretty sure all the fans have been made by Spal. Interesting post on fan development here, with a link to a drawing:

OD cleaver,

No right side scoop installed.

CEL was on all the time.
checked for codes when I felt like it with ECMSPY. along with temp checks.

I had no hot start issues. I was living in GA and AL at the time I had the fan out so it did see some hot days. Also did a road trip of 7500 miles from AL to CA to NY to AL with the fan out.

I think a nonmoving fan is what has keeps the rear cylinder hot.

Now with that new flash it seems to run while the bike is in motion. This goes along with the stopped fan blocking the air movement theory. RSS or not IMHO it is the still air was the issue not the scoop. Buell has everyone buying a right side scoop after they said it wasn't needed.
Great marketing gimmick or engineering marvel???

I have an 06 so no flash for me but now I have to think RSS or not to RSS???

Fan or no fan???

No fan and RSS???

Screw it I'll just keep riding and stop thinking and enjoy the next 50,000 miles

Where is the thermostat for the fan?

There are so many reports here of fans "hardly running." My fan runs A LOT. It always has. I did 180 miles round-trip on the LIE yesterday at a steady 70mph and the fan was on most of the time. Yes, it was 90F but I was moving at a pretty good clip.

I've ordered the comfort kit and will get the accompanying flash accomplished after I've installed the kit.

Tipsy- there's a temperature sensor on the rear cylinder head. That sends a signal that the ECM uses to decide when to cut on or off the fan. Temperatures for fan operation are listed in the shop manual if you have one. The new ECM flash will no doubt change those temps and will include the bike's speed in determining the need for fan operation.

Fan operation depends a lot on miles on the bike. Mine didn't seem to start tapering off until about 5,000 miles, but still continued to come down until recently at 20,000 miles.

Hugh...my bike is an '08. I bought it with 414 miles on the clock and noticed the fan running (at highway speeds) the very first time I rode the bike. I did a fly-n-ride from NC to NYC so I rode the bike 500+ miles the day I bought it.

I now have just over 17K on the clock and the fan seems to run just as much as ever...if not more. I'll be very interested to see if the comfort kit plus the flash has a discernible effect on the fan run-time (and yes, I do have a service manual).

Tipsy- yours is definitely unusual for an 08. Seems like most 08/09 riders already report the fan rarely comes on at speed even before the comfort kit install. I guess it's possible you have a bad sensor or something. Maybe it'll turn up when they do the reflash or maybe the reflash will cure it.

'06 with 20,500 miles. Fan quit today. How hard is it to swap out?? Anyone with link(s) to procedure?

TIA
Frank

PS: RCrinns RSS and fan rarely ran except for a shutoff (central FL).
