I bought this 97 S1 from a BWB member. It arrived Friday and I rode it some Saturday. I noticed while riding it, upshifting works correct and no weird sounds. When you come up to a stop and start downshifting, it whines and sounds like it is binding up. Possibly coming from the tranny or the front pulley area. Could be something loose in the tranny? I dont really know. I called the previous owner and he said it started this after the swingarm recall was done. Who knows !!! Does this sound familiar or has this happened to anyone else. What did it turn out to be? What kind of expense for parts and labor? If it is pricey to fix, should I get the previous owner to pay for this since he sold it in perfect condition. Then said it was doing it prior to the sell. Any ideas??? Thanks, Jimmy (Message edited by egnblu on August 11, 2009) |

Sounds like the belt may be too tight. |

Have a dealership check it if the belt checks out okay. The belt should be loose to the tune of 1.5" to 1.75" of upwards free play when you apply 10 PBS of upwards force at mid-span of lower run with transmission in neutral. You might also check tranny/primary oil level. I strongly recommed completing all downshifting before coming to a stop. |

Blake, This happens while you are slowing/ downshifting, I do not stop in fifth gear and then start downshifting. It is at my mechanic buddys house. He is servicing the entire bike. Hope that is all it is. My S1W does not do this or my FLHT. I guess we will see. Thanks, Jimmy |

My M2's make a slight whining noise while slowing down and downshifting. The belts are adjusted properly and track in the center of the pulley and look fine. I actually think it sounds cool. |

Careful, adjusted "properly" according to the owner's manual is by most accounts including mine, too tight. |

Bert, This is not a cool sound it is making. I like the old gear drive whine, but this sounds like it is more of a grinding sound. Thanks Blake, I will check the belt to make sure it isn't too tight. Jimmy |

I agree Blake, and it is adjusted according to the BWB Forum belt adjusting specifications as to tension. I do tend to worry more about tracking the belt so it rides in the center of the pulleys and not just measuring both sides so they are equal. This decreases the chance of premature sidewall wear. I hope it is not the bearings Engblu. |

Bert. Which bearings are you talking about? |

Either the wheel or tranny bearings. |

Well, I decided to ride till it broke. It lasted till Monday. I was riding on the freeway at about 70 and all of the sudden it rev'ed pretty high and started slowing down. It seemed to shift fine, but no power from any gear. Tore it down tonight and the Tranny pulley had stripped. The lock band around the nut was missing about half of the material. So there you go... Does anyone make a aluminum 27t ? Jimmy |

I'm sure some of the Sponsors carry 27t pulleys and you could post in the parts wanted area also. |

Photo would be great. This is the first I've heard of the locking plate being torn up. American Sport Bike used to sell an aluminum alloy sprocket. Here it is. It is 26 tooth though. |

I had a lock plate let go on my Road Pig a couple of years back, the retaining bolts weren't loctited in place when my mechanic replaced belt/pulleys and went through the trans at 75,000 miles. The bolts backed out, the plate slipped out and got eaten up between the pulley and the trans case and once the plate was loose, the pulley moved out on the splines and stripped out. Right in front of the only liquor store in Dripping Springs, Texas. At least there was plenty of cold beer while while I waited for my son to show up with his pickup... Only time the bike's ever left me stranded. Almost to 89,000 miles now. rt |

I had a kawasaki do that, does that count? (Had to split the stupid cases as a result...) |

"Tranny pulley had stripped. The lock band around the nut was missing about half of the material. " So for us newbies, what was the root cause? Belt too tight or something along the lines of what Road_thing had described? Curious minds want to now... |

I personally have no idea what happened. I guess it was going away when i got it a couple of weeks ago when i asked about the noise. I called Dan at NRHS and he is the one that said to look there first. He had seen it happen a lot of times. Belt was not too tight when I got it or when it broke. I am sure there are a lot more qualified people on this forum that can answer it better than me. |

I have a friend with an S2, I do a lot of the wrenching on his bike. His had the same problem. Had to buy a new sprocket, lock nut and retainer. The splines on the output shaft were a bit worn, the old sprocket worked but the fit was much better with a new sprocket. I happened to have a spare so we are using that until the new one is installed (it's here, just no time to install yet...). He noticed it when he heard a rubbing noise by his foot when he cornered. Sometimes it was there, other times not. The sprocket was REALLY loose. Much more wear on the output shaft would have required a teardown and replacment. Not a fun job... Brad |

Weird, mine only made a noise every once in a while and when down shifting. My teeth are gone off the pulley, but the main shaft is ok. I had just done a great 2nd gear wheelie and was on the freeway at 70mph when it gave it up. You can put it in gear and turn the nut and the pulley will not move.. Could have been a lot worse.. I will get some pictures when I go over there. Jimmy |

Here is a couple of pictures: No teeth at all left. Didn't hurt the main shaft at all. I got lucky.. |
