I need a new stator for my '09. All the dealers are pretty consistent on the price: $679.00 Anyone know of a source with a better price? |

Most Badweb sponsor/dealers will discount 10%. BTW- isn't your bike still under warranty? |

Yes, it is under warranty. It wasn't an easy decision to take the hit on the part price. I had to weigh a lot of factors and I won't bore you with a lengthy post about everything I took into account. Let's just say I prefer to do my own work, #1. And #2, due to a variety of factors, I would anticipate a much longer turn-around time going the warranty route. |

For $679, I'd look at getting it rewound at an electric motor shop. |

Maybe it's the same as certain other Rotax engines, or maybe you could get one off a grenaded raced engine or similar? |

My 2008 stator failed (on the way to Vegas no less). Seriously, you're gonna be without a bike for a while. May as well leave it and rent a Triumph, Honda, and Ducati for the weekends so you can ride. |

You might want to check out: http://www.ricksmotorsportelectrics.com/index.php or other stator rebuilders. But, by the time you pay for shipping, rebuild and time, it will probably be a wash as far as $'s. Good Luck Neil S. |

Dear GAWD! Is that the right price? Are they made of gold or something?? |

They do have a bit of a gold tint to them... I appreciate the responses. Just FYI for those interested: I spoke to another '09 owner and he said his failed also as well as a friend of his. Odd since I haven't seen much chatter on the forums concerning this issue. A couple of points of interest: The stator passed all of the electrical tests as described in the service manual. It tested normal for continuity and resistance. It took a teardown to identify the stator as the problem and then it was obvious. It had warped a bit and scraped a couple of windings against the backplate of the rotor. Also, on teardown the instructions describe pulling the wires down through the wiring harness to remove the cover which holds the stator. What you need to do is pull the wires out of the SHEATH that they run through. If you pull the sheath out with the wires you are looking at a much more involved teardown to get the wires routed back where they came from. |

I seriously don't know WTF kinda suppliers Buell is using, but this is becoming an sad opera. For bike with such a good chassis and balance, EB should be LIVID. In before Court This bike is so much more reliable than my Porsche or BMW. Buell only has 200 people and is doing a GREAT job. Buy my book! Also, I'll get the website 2010 specifications fixed. Sorry couldn't resist (Message edited by clarkjw on August 17, 2009) |

Parrick, What was the problem you experienced? I guess it quit charging? I've got some issues I'm still trying to get resolved with the electrical system, headlights pulsate and cluster light pulsates. Charging system checked ok by the dealer. |

I think it's normal for the lights and cluster to pulsate - mine always have and I've had an '09 cluster fitted to cure the electrical problems I was having. I've also had a load of problems with my 1125, had to take it to dealers last weekend for yet more Warranty work, even a dealer said 'I bet you regret buying it!' Strangely enough, I don't, I love it to bits, I just can't rely on it for any European trips I sorted the problem of not having a reliable Hyperbike last week by buying a Ducati to keep along side it Any distance work before this was done on one of my Tubers. |

It had warped a bit and scraped a couple of windings against the backplate of the rotor. Seems like you could shadetree repair that. A wack with a rubber mallet to cure the warp and application of some appropriate varnish or epoxy to reinsulate the scraped area? For ~$679 I think it'd be worth trying. |

Hugh: One issue you run into when you "wack" a varnished stator is the other turns are also varnished together. The varnish then can pull the wire coating off the wires and you now have turn to turn shorts. The water based varnishes used today are pretty brittle once they are cured. That is the next issue, if you use the incorrect type of varnish for touch up, you just melt right through the original varnish and through the magnet wire coating, more problems. We only manufacture 10,000 stators a day in our little plant here in KY. I deal with these issues ALL the time. If they have not been varnished after winding, then the magnet wire coating is flexible enough to take a little manipulating here and there. |

Ccryder- Thanks for the info. I figured somebody on here would know those kind of details. So would you pretty much rule out a home-brew repair, or do you think it might be feasible? |

Sounds like a little factory in KY ought to tool up to build Rotax stators... seems to be one heck of a profit margin built into them....

I had two stator failures. They dealer had my bike for 10 days both times. a few weeks back I was contacted by buells and they wanted to know a few things. We had a great conversation and he ended it with " if you need anything anything at all contact us at buell. call them they will make it right and in a timely manner |

From what was originally described, I would say that it is not home-brew repairable (disclaimer) but I do not know the construction 100%. If it is not varnished completely or the turns heat bonded it could be repaired if you could find a varnish to work. A lot of real "if's" especially considering the working environment. |

Indeed that price is correct. Y0442.2AM STATOR ASSY, 14V 520W Retail Price:$679.55 You could get it from Liberty or Precision for 10% off. The lower output 2008 version is the same price Y0442.1AMA STATOR ASSEMBLY Retail Price:$679.54 |

I was told at my dealer that their seeing more and more failure on the 09 stators than the 08s. "laughing" He said buell changed their problems from low voltage 08s to a bunch of 09 stators that just burn out. Its the vendors that buell get supplies from that ruins this bikes reputation. |

That is an insane price, given what a stator is. |

What reputation? Thats funny, to date mine hasn't had a single issue. Actually, can too much power that it hurts my bad shoulder be an issue? I haven't done a thing to it, still has the 'noid. Anyway, bad suppliers hurt all vehicle manufacturers. |

I know of one 09R with a failed stator as well...FWIW. Covered under warranty tho! Go Buell! |

Aprilia also has stator problem's, they also have there own version of the XB #77 connector. Aprilia's connector issue is the "brown connector" |

FYI the stator assembly has somthing to do with the flywheel and the second stator I got had an updated part fix. Thats what the service guy said. Havnt had an issue since. |

Two weeks ago my stator died on my '09 1125R. I had to knock the cobwebs off my Sportster and put it back into daily service. |

Froggy, I'd agree with you on the power thing. I really would like to get mine dyno tested. I swear, I thought my FJR1300 was a powerhouse....but this thing puts it to shame. It builds speed in such a mad rush that I chicken out and back out of the throttle. Haven't hit the redline yet...yet! |

Hey Jim: If you think the price for a stator is insane, wait to you see what they charge for stamping dies these days or, low core loss electrical grade steel or, a few hours of press time. Oh yeah, winding machines just grow on trees with the tooling/ programing pre-installed. I set up a low volume high performance rotor/ stator line for just under $1,000,000.00. For that sum, it did not include any design time, materials or assembly. Been there done that and had it all go up in smoke. Just a swag on materials would be $170.00. The rest of the cost is tooling, assembly/ testing equipment, a roof/ building/ utilities and maybe $50.00 in labor and 20-28% profit. I've probably priced 20 lines/ products like this in the last 12 years with the big "E". Oh yeah and it has to produce at less than 50ppm at the customer, that is WORLD CLASS, made in the USA! Ccryder, just wondering, why is this 5 times the cost of the XB stator? |

Do you want me to hazard a guess? My best guess is that the XB stator is the same as the Sportster stator and you know what they say about volume spreading the costs..... |
