A few weeks ago I was having shifting problems. Turns out it was the Detent Retaining Clip that was broken. So I replaced that and got everything back together. At first it was shifting just fine but after about a hundred miles or so I started to have the same problem again. The shifter seems stiffer when shifting between 1st through 4th gear. Then it real tough to get into 5th gear. Could it be the clip again or something else? Any ideas? Thanks |

Ss11b1p: While you were in there did you check the Shifter Shaft Assembly Alignment ??? Here are a few things that effect the transmission shifting ... Clutch adjustment ... Primary chain adjustment(if the primary chain has worn a grove in the adjuster shoe, it means the primary chain has or is being adjusted too tight) ... Drive belt adjusted too tight ... Improper transmission oil level, too low or too high ... |

Is11b1p Just going into the tranny on my '02 S3T and there is no retaining clip on the detent plate & I didn't see any marks on the plate where the clip should have been. You betsha, after going this far, I will pull the complete assy & check drum, forks, etc. See my post http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/485950.html?1250070634 Later, De |

Why did the clip break in the 1st place? Lots of reasons so +1 one on all Buelistic said and I'll go one further. check the pins on the end of the shift drum, they back out and put pressure on the detent plate breaking the clip. They can also skew the detent plate so that it's not sitting strait in relation to the roller arm and shift pawl causing difficult shifts. Don't get me started.... Thanks for all the info. I appreciate it. Looks like I will be opening up everything again. Psycrow: Your saying if the detent plate is skewed it has to be replaced? Thanks Dan |

No the pins in the Shift drum need to be pounded back in or the Drum needs replaced (most recommend) If I had to replace the Drum tho Id do the Baker smooth shift kit to fix the issue for good. Psy |

Alright, What would the signs be saying that I needed a new drum? I think the pins need to be pounded back in because when I put the Detent Plate back on I had to really press it in to get the clip back on. Had to use a pair of pliers to slide it down. Wish I would of known all this stuff before hand. I'm learning as I go. First time doing all of this stuff. Dan |

I don't think having to put SOME pressure to get the clip on is the problem, I cant see all the pins comming out the exact same distance. You have bad pins if the detent plate doesn't sit straight, parallel with the end of the drum. Its hard to explain if you do a search there are threads with pictures of detent plates sitting crooked on the pins. Psy |

Now that I think of it when I put the plate on it was not sitting straight. Could be the problem I guess. Dan |

I've rebuilt my tranny 3 times - but it wasn't until I used the Baker 5 speed transmission which cured all the tranny problems. Regretably the Buell tranny is a standard XL tranny - the Baker is a proper replacement. No more clips, no more clunks, no more missed shifts. |
