So I was brainstorming in the garage the other day.. an X1 fuel tank will almost fit between the two upper tubes in my S3 frame, but there is about 1/2" of the tank that would need to be cut away and resealed in one area to make it sit level. Anyone know what I could use to reseal the tank if I were to make it fit in the S3 frame? I have an S3 tank that would fit perfectly already, but if I go with the X1 tank then I don't have to worry about paint ever bubbling, AND could go with a '99 tank cover to get the "nostrils" I'm also aware of the different methods of mounting the two tanks in the rear, but if there's an epoxy or something that will seal the tank, then cutting a slot into the rear of the tank won't be a problem to make it mount just like the rear of an S3 tank. I'll still have to get my hands on a late model S3 seat to make sure that it will match up to the lines on the rear of the X1 tank. | ||

FYI, regardless of if the paint is on the tank or the color- if it's not the right paint, it will bubble up. The S2s have tank covers and their paints still bubble... | ||

The paint on my S3 tank has bubbled horribly,not just around the filler but over the whole tank and must be stripped completely. IIRC the correct primer is a PPG product. If anyone remembers the part number please post it. | ||

I have used a product call Dominion Plastic surgery. It comes is flex and ridged. It will seal about any plastic that i have seen. Radiator tanks, coolant bottles, batteries. etc. | ||

how does the seat line up onto the x1 tank cover? I wouldnt think a s3 seat would line up to it. I think just repainting the s3 tank correctly would be the best bet | ||

I have the same problem and this is the 4th time my bike is being repainted! I took it to a car body shop now, they're using some special products to seal the tank. but my question is: what cause the bubbling? the gas? when I bought my bike, a couple of years ago, it had a custom made paint job and didn't have any bubbling problems. maybe I should get in touch with the old owner and ask him what did he use... | ||

For those of you that have used tank sealers, this would seem to negate the need for the special primer as the tank would no longer allow fuel vapor to escape under the paint. I would hate to repaint my tank only to have it lift again. |
