cut and pasted from an Email I received today... AMEN AND AMEN A soldier’s view of Michael Jackson’s death This is written by a young man serving his third tour of duty in Iraq . Thought you might find his take on the Michael Jackson news interesting. .................................................. .................................... Okay, I need to rant. I was just watching the news, and I caught part of a report on Michael Jackson . As we all know, Jackson died the other day. He was an entertainer who performed for decades. He made millions, he spent millions, and he did a lot of things that make him a villain to many people. I understand that his death would affect a lot of people, and I respect those people who mourn his death, but that isn't the point of my rant. Why is it that when ONE man dies, the whole of America loses their minds with grief. When a man dies whose only contribution to the country was to ENTERTAIN people, the American people find the need to flock to a memorial in Hollywood , and even Congress sees the need to hold a "moment of silence" for his passing? Am I missing something here? ONE man dies, and all of a sudden he's a freaking martyr because he entertained us for a few decades? What about all those SOLDIERS who have died to give us freedom? All those Soldiers who, knowing that they would be asked20to fight in a war, still raised their hands and swore to defend the Constitution and the United States of America . Where is their moment of silence? Where are the people flocking to their graves or memorials and mourning over them because they made the ultimate sacrifice? Why is it when a Soldier dies, there are more people saying "good riddance," and "thank God for IEDs?" When did this country become so calloused to the sacrifice of GOOD MEN and WOMEN, that they can arbitrarily b low off their deaths, and instead, throw themselves into mourning for a "Pop Icon?" ;I think that if they are going to hold a moment of silence IN CONGRESS for Michael Jackson , they need to hold a moment of silence for every service member killed in Iraq and Afghanistan . They need to PUBLICLY recognize every life that has been lost so that the American people can live their callous little lives in the luxury and freedom that WE, those that are living and those that have gone on, have provided for them. But, wait, that would take too much time, because there have been so many willing to make that sacrifice. After all, we will never make millions of dollars. We will never star in movies, or write hit songs that the world will listen too. We only shed our blood, sweat and tears so that people c an enjoy what they have. Sorry if I have offended, but I needed to say it. Remember these five words the next time you think of someone who is serving in the military; "So that others may live..." Isaac | ||

Dear Isaac: I totaly understand your point of view, and I wish that this country spent one minute of silence per week to remember the Brave young HEROS who have given their lives in denfence of our country I am ashamed of what the congress did, but I am ashamed of them by and large, sadly there are only a few good men and women there who understand that the office is about duty to the people of this country, the rest are busy trying to get them selves re-elected, and line their pockets. For my part I was angered by the seemingly endless prattle of the Jacko syncophants, and media types. I think while he was tallented, he was also a poor role model for the young people today, his questionable activites further also adding to MY distain. In the end the news does not follow the millions of citizens like me, who support our Troops / Sailors / Airmen When you have had enough "media" please remember that, Each and Every one of you matter to us, We are Proud of you, Your service, it shows the world our very best I will observe a moment of silence each morning before I leave the home in rememberence, thanks for your service and the reminder. You and the rest deserve that at the very least.. | ||

I can never understand the infatuation with useless entertainers/actors/pro ball players/nascar drivers.....and for that matter politicians. They don't give two shits about you,so why should you? Oh sure the world would be pretty bland without them...but why try to mimic them? Live your own life.Be "you". Teachers,firemen,police and military......those are the cats that get my respect! | ||

Apparently the originator of that email forgot that Congress set aside a national holiday, Memorial Day, to honor all the soldiers, troops and those in the military who gave their lives for this country. A whole day of commemoration, honor and respect for our fallen American heroes puts a moment of silence for a different kind of American hero (to some) in perspective, IMHO. | ||

Jacksons music has had impact on a many individual's lives in his writing. Hes brought joy in his words.... hes brought sadness in his words. He also as what was said spent millions. Yes he has.... how about 33 millions dollars to charity. The men that protect my right for freedom deserve my respect. Jackson also has my respect. Two different things. | ||

Johnson started the process as we know today. if someone wants to get exact facts go ahead, this is just from memory for me. i'm not the digging type, unless we put money on it...lol and if thats the case, we should get a day for farrah fawcet too, she gave plenty of joy to the world for those of us who were old enough. michael jackson did NOT molest those children! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . he made LOVE to them! I agree with this cat. Seeing hordes of people so wrapped up in the death of a supposed child molester made me friggin sick. Memorial Day isnt enough. We should honor and thank the men and women of our military for our freedoms on a DAILY basis. THANK YOU!  | ||

Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Purple Heart Day those come to mind right off. not to say that MJ's passing wasn't made up to much but I guess it fits with his style big and flashy. if we did a day for every soldier we would never be done. we should never forget to be thankful and grateful for what we have for we have it all. in large part due to the sacrifice of all that serve. more than most i am grateful to those that serve as they are helping me stay safe even as i write this post from my civilian office on base. | ||

an easy answer is, people had seen Jackson's concerts ,videos, trials, & mishaps for decades. they somehow felt some 'connection to him, & thought they knew him. So when he croaks ,they mourn him.(weirdos!) compare that to a faceless hero who loses his life for the ideals of his country in a unpopular war. | ||

The media in this country value celebrity above honor, gossip about truth, greed above honesty, scandal above investigation. I took my tv out to a field and pumped full of buckshot on 1/1/09. Thats my Neilsen contribution to their ratings. If more did the same, just maybe the market would feel the dent of citizens and consumers making their own decisions. have you noticed that since the election is over, the daily war count had ended? | ||
