I think we're OVER-THINKING this a bit much.
If I had to put my money on decisions made in the change to Hayes rear, it was on the basis of cost, supportability, stuff like that and NOT performance.
Heck, I've got Hayes hydraulics on my mountainbike (mineral oil hydraulic fluid)
A LOT of 125GP club racers use mountain bike hydraulic brakes on the rear - not because they need a brake for racing, they just need a brake to get through tech inspection - and the mountain bike hydraulic brake saves a couple pounds. |

Okay . . . . I admit I have a visibility problem . . . . but oh I wish you were here today. . . . I have another . . er, "small" problem.
Vickie is over at her Dad's house working and I thought "what a wonderful time for home projects".
It's ugly around here.
On the bright side . . . . history tells us that all innovative carries some price.

P. S. - we've had yet another "Jack vs. Gray Paint" episode . . . but, the good news is that it pales in comparison to my innovative way to clean the patio.
I was using a leaf blower to do the side patio and as I was working my way along . . . . I recalled Vick's last instructions . . . . . "don't forget to clean the BBQ out" . . how hard can that be for a guy holding a machine producing winds in excess of 200MPH?
God bless Erin . . . the girl next door . . . . who is getting married today. If I were her Mother I'm sure I'd have never been smart enough to hang the silk gown in the fresh breeze coming off the Bay.
On the other hand . . . . I'd never have to answer to an inconsolable daughter with a black wedding dress either.
Yeah . . . . turns out . . . and it makes sense now that I think about it . . . . that a leaf blower is a poor way to purge a Weber BBQ of ashes. Don't waste time with the mental picture . . . think World Trade Center collapse.

And . . . . ohmygoodness . . . do I have an angry neighbor. . . I looked at his "dapple gray" Labradoodle and started laughing. Apparently:
1) I thought it was funnier than he did.
2) He is unfamiliar with the phrase "shit happens"

Rear brake is near useless. I suspect Buell is putting efforts into improving areas of the bike that actually have an effect on proper riding. |

I for one use my rear brake quite a bit compared to most.
1) Some buells stand up when the front brake is applied while cornering, my Uly does this, so I use the rear brake when trying to shed any speed due to inadequate corner judgement or suprises like gravel or obstacles.
2) The buell rear brake takes a long time to bed in and have any decent bite, BUT I think it has a great feel when bedded in and proves powerful enough for its intention. I dont want an oversensitive rear brake when I need to slow it down in a corner when traction for braking is limited.
So I guess oddly enough I am glad the Buell brake is a little weak because I use it when cornering sometimes. |

It's a bit hard to understand why some go to the trouble to be a bit "sh***y" about anyone's posts, especially mine. "Formally" is another way of saying "officially"; but then some jerk would wonder if I had a badge on; so understand/misunderstand at all times if it makes you happy, eh?
MY rear brake locks the rear tyre IMMEDIATELY in a slow-speed stop if I forget to use enough front brake. Noooo, I'm not standing on the brake lever. And the front rotor and pads are being replaced under warranty because of warping, @ around 12,000 km. Waiting for parts.
I agree it DOES help settle the bike in a corner; but I expected more based on my past experience with rear disc brakes on big bikes.
I asked about the rear caliper in the hopes that it would improve the QUALITY of rear braking, which is minimal in its contribution to the bike's stopping power. Not at all what I'm used to. |

Red, look into some good pads for the rear brake. Everyone took off on your thread because they weren't quiet sure what you wanted out of it, or why. If you are concerned about the wheel locking, get you some good street/track pads, bleed the rear brake and you should notice an improvement.
Just understand that not everyone uses that brake a lot. So your question about it was a bit odd and naturally people are going to jabber about the need to even use it to begin with. By all means, if you use it on a regular basis then try what I mentioned.
Also, if you are using it for quick stops, I would suggest practicing those in a parking lot until you learn the threshold of that brake. During the Sportbike Rider course I was able to bring my 1125 to a complete stop without locking the rear tire VERY quickly. Most of this had to do with shifting my weight properly and keenly listening/feeling the for the rear tire to start to wash out. That ZTL2 front brake will get you stopped in a hurry once you get a good feel for it.

Front brake is better, especially leaned over in a corner, WAY better.

I really like the rear brake on my 1125. I used to lock up the rear on my XB fairly often - party bad riding (which I've worked on) and partly because it just had too much bite for a rear and I was used to other, better balanced braking systems.
The rear on teh 1125 feels just right to me. You can shed some speed with it, settle the chassis and do your slow speed parking lot/gravel road manuevers just fine, and nothing else. You don't need it to do anything more than that. |

Thanks for that, GeForce; my focus is ALWAYS on how to improve my ride. That is the basis even of my complaints, as well as my praise, for the 1125.
I did write a second time to Erik Buell, telling him this time that with about 15 mods (especially the lowered seat, touring windscreen and enhanced muffler), I am entirely happy with my 1125 now. |

Gee, thanks for asking, fresno. Turns out, as I stated to Erik Buell, a used Buell 1125R isn't worth half of retail in Australia. That meant I had to make it work, as I wasn't willing to lose A$10,000 in a few months' time (U$8,000).
However, someone DID want to pay a reasonable amount for my 1983 Honda V4; so I sold it to make room in my one-car garage for both the Buell and my wife's Hyundai. |
