Installed the new belt and I had to struggle a bit ,just to get the idler pulley back on the studs.When I spun in the rear axle,the belt got VERY tight. You can strum it and get a note out of it and you can't turn/slip the idler pulley on the belt like I can, fairly easily do on my XB12. Belt number GO500.1AAG(XB upgrade part).The belt is "grainy" on the idler side,not smooth like the XB12's belt. I can't hardly imagine this tightness is correct or that it will stretch after some run in. The rear pulley is new and the front is a just like new eBay part..as well as the idler pulley unit. Any ideas? | ||

My 2008 uly popped its belt and it was replaced under warranty. When I got it back, it was just as tight as you describe. I could play a not on the damn thing. The old one with 16,000 on it was loose enough so that I could turn the idler with a fingertip of pressure. Joesbuell modified his idler so that there was a little bit of slack. Mine is still under warranty so I ain't touchin' nothin'! | ||

are you sure its all 03 parts? When I did my 04+ belt upgrade I didnt realize the idler pulley bracket was different and played HELL getting that belt on.....but I got it and rode about an hour with it making horrible noises. then I came home and took it off asap.....did some research found the bracket is different, once I got that bracket it worked like a champ. havent had any issues to date with it, but I did get trojans free spirits spring tensioner for the idler pulley. I give that credit for not popping my belt, as I used means I don't want to say out loud to get that belt on :-) | ||

I've heard nothing but good reports on the Free Spirits tensioner, haven't done the mod myself yet but fully intend to. | ||

I put the tensioner on both of my '03's because of the fragile belt. I can't say that it helped, but I have been very happy with them, in fact I salvaged one to put on the ULY! The new belts tend to be very tight. | ||

Has your bike been down? Sometimes the axle or swingarm pivot bolt will get bent in a minor crash and the belt will be too tight. | ||

Isn't that part number for an 04+ belt? Did you upgrade from the 03 setup including the pulleys and idler? | ||

Rear pulley is a new 04 XB12 unit. The front pulley is off of a tuber and is like new, the idler is a used 04 XB12 pulley and has a new pair of bearings in it. The difference between the old style 03 idler and the 04 idler is the fork dimensions/angle. The idler pulley in itself is the same between the 03 and 04,the difference being the double bearings in the 04 with a shorter spacer set up to make room for the double bearings. The old style 03 has a single bearing in it. The drive/driven pulleys have the correct count for teeth and I can't imagine that the wrong tooth count would even fit...as in way too loose or not even bolt up at all. Bike has never been bent/dropped other than the initial tip over with the side stand dealio when it was one day old. The new belt runs true and the swing arm brace has never been removed with belt tension on it. Nothing is wrong as near as I can tell........so I guess I'll just ride it and see what happens......even if a over load makes a bearing or belt "pop",it's not like I will be stranded far from home..it's my commuter bike and work will grant me an excuse for mechanical breakdown causing me to be late for work.
