OK, so I checked the 2010 Buell page just for the heck of it. Dry weight still 425 pounds. My '06 (with a full tank of fuel and ready to ride) weighs 515 pounds. Bathroom-scale certified (highly accurate, BTW). Where can I extract 90 pounds of stuff? No way 4.4 gallons of fuel, 2.5 quarts of oil, 1 quart of tranny oil, a smidgen of fork oil, and a dollop of brake fluid weighs 90 lb. I know the "dry weight" is measured in an alternate universe, but it still ticks me off. Deception is deception, whether it's Honda, BMW, or Buell. I know, they all do it (read Monkey Butt). But still... Oops, they had hydrogen (lighter than helium) in the tires. That must be it. --Doc |

Starting with a 425 Lbs dry weight I can get within about 8 lbs of your actual measured weight. I did add the weight of the Buell luggage, the luggage and bracketry is the largest weight contributor. Gasoline, oils and battery are also added. I have not accounted for your additional added item's. Do you still have a Garmin GPS? whats that weigh? Do you have traction grips? another weight difference, How about different than OEM tires?. You are correct the "dry" measurement technique is deceptive. (Message edited by rsh on July 26, 2009) |

Just remember - water is 7 lb per gallon. I think fuel is similar; oil will be quite a bit heavier. Battery? WAAAY heavy. |

I am not sure about gasoline but JP8 is 7.8 pounds if I remember correctly. I believe oil also weighs less than water. It has a lower specific gravity which is why it floats on top of water, as do all petroleum products I am familiar with (gas, jetfuel, diesel, engine oil) |

Fuel and oil = 6 pounds per gallon. I think the "dry weight" has no battery, no fork oil, engine oil, tranny oil, fuel. I'll be the tiny tool kit under the seat isn't included either. BTW, These are US gallons, I am talking here. Perhaps this would be less confusing if we start the thread over in metric? 1000cc of water = 1.000KG EASY. |

Maybe "dry weight" is just a term that is used in the motorcycle industry. It is the real weight less about 100 pounds and all the manufacturers go by it. or Maybe "dry weight" refers to an old drunk guy named "dry" who used to work at the carnival guessing peoples weight and now he just throws out numbers for motorcycles. Dry weight, like crank horsepower, must be measured at the brochure. If you measure it at the motorcycle, it gets all screwed up. Originally, dry weight was calculated by taking the weight of the individual parts and adding them up. This was necessary, as traditionally they had to write up the brochures and press announcements for the bikes before the bikes existed... so they were guessing. Optimistically. Now, there is an "everybody lies" element to it. I'm guessing everyone sorta lies by about the same amount. So if Buell told the truth, it could look bad for them relative to every other bike. It's kind of a catch-22. Though, perhaps, ruthless engineering ought to knock some heads and cut out the BS and publish the weight of the ready to run bike with an empty gas tank... Just put an astrix beside it and publish the *real* weights of bikes in the same class in fine print at the bottom. That'd be a selling point for me, if I had to look at a Buell spec sheet to get the straight answer on how much that Yamaha I was looking at really weighed. The moment I saw it, I would have a subtle "brain click" that would make me forever trust Buell statements and forever not trust the Yamaha... |

Thats a great idea Reepicheap. As an aside, I'll be watching the reviews of the new XT's with great interest this year. I plan on buying one late '10 or early '11, unless I'm suprised by some new development. Kinda peaved about the new yellow color. That's always been my fav and was planning on doing that to an XT anyway. Now all the cool kids will be sporting yellow. |

Here's an idea for new colors: Speckled rusty brown. In time, the muffler would match and everyone would just relax and ride it.

I don't think I agree with that statement Cyclonedon. Yellow is faster. Yellow is for people who don't try to hide in the pack of black sheep. Black bikes are as common as bird-shit and almost as appealing. Rust brown would rock. (But still not as cool as yellow) |

If the new yellow had been an option when I got my '07, I might have gone that way. I've never been a black bike fan, but since I've had mine for 2 years - it does grow on you ! |
