Good thread here... With pictures can`t beat it,Wish there were Sticky threads locked for info like this... instead of the the " Archives " Transmission problems have been noted in the past, but are hard for most to dig them up out of the Archives at times including me... Thanks also for letting all know the outcome of the whole deal... |

How hard was it to split the cases? Any special tools besides your basic harmonic wheel puller / steering wheel puller? |

How hard was it to split the cases? not too hard, once you take out all the bolts holding it.. it cannot be split apart by hand.. I was able to get a small floor jack in between the swingarm-shaft's mounting area and crack that side of the case open, then it was easy to split it apart. Like cracking an egg badweb.. what are the gaskets will I need to get for the rebuild? I've never used loctite, and will also have to get some of that for sure. And also need to get some silicone bead sealant for the case to mate back together, right?-or-something-else? The top rocker box has rubber gaskets that im sure that can be reused but the lower ones are going to have to be replaced.. working down to the jug there are the upper and lower gaskets, the top one is metal and the lower one is a regular gasket; would i have to replace the metal one? have to get a new gear-case gasket.. and a starter motor gasket.... Think thats it, missing anything? |

a full set of gaskets = cheap insurance My luck would be put it all back together, have a leak, and have to tear it back down again just to save a couple bucks. |

For the cases, use Honda bond or equivalent. Sillycone sucks. Keep in mind I have sealed more shit together in the 13 years of being an auto tech than you can know and Sillycone always leaks. Get a complete top end gasket kit and replace everything, even rubber gaskets will leak, specially on a buell. Primary cover gasket and shift shaft, also your cam cover gasket. They do sell a complete gasket set if you like as well IIRC. |

I think Permatex Grey is similar to Honda Bond as well, and is probably at your local auto parts store. If it's like my KDX, you probably want a semi hardening gasket sealer, which is what the Permatex is... I'm suprised you can pry it from one end like that, particularly the end so far from the crank. Maybe the crank bearings aren't as tight on the Buell as they were on my 2 stroke motor... |

Regardless of what is broken or damaged if it were me...I would put a Baker drum kit in it while it is apart...I would also advise that you have all remaining parts magnafluxed or other wise inspected for cracks. If you don't mind having it apart for a couple of weeks longer...send the trans along with the new replacement parts to a specialty trans shop and have the gears back-cut...between the new drum and the gear work, it will shift like butter. |

I was afraid of dust getting onto the parts & engine so I temporarily put the engine back together.. the hydraulic lifters, cam-gears, pushrods, pistons, shifter drum, and the broken tranny parts were left out.. havent got the parts yet (Message edited by ochoa0042 on July 30, 2009) |

Ochoa, I'm tearing my engine down now as well. I'm trying to fix a different shifting problem. So far the trickiest part for me is removing the rear isolator. I'm having to cut down a hex key and use a 1/4" box wrench to remove it since there's not enough room to just use a normal hex key. For Gaskets, you should order these: http://www.cometic.com/default.aspx You should also hone the cyclinders and install new rings. Perhaps a valve job too since you have the heads off. And if you really want to do it well, get the crankshaft professionally balanced. I'm also interesting in know more about what Fast1075 suggested. |
