It could be worse...at least they are WORKING. Although the free work sounds scary I agree. I actually made the comment to my significant other a few days ago that we should just stop working and let everyone else pay for our living. Works out well for quite a few people these days. Then I decided that I like my toys to much. And Uncle Sam doesn't just let his folks quit while wearing the ole uniform.

No matter which way you look at it "Free" is the worst of all the four letter words.

My friend sells luxury yachts for a living. Let's just say business isn't exactly booming at the moment.

He works solely on a commission basis. He goes to work every Tuesday through Saturday, and sits around the office staring at his computer screen.

Since he hasn't sold a boat in months, he hasn't gotten paid in months. But he isn't eligible for unemployment because as far as they're concerned, he has a job.

So, I guess he's "working for free" too.

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose.

Geforce, He'll let you quit. But you won't like the goon squad. I saw a lot of guys quit at RAF Lakenheath in the early 80s, not a pretty sight.

Jaimec,

Welcome to my life. Been that way for much of 2008 and 2009. Starting to turn the corner, but folks who are 100% commission are often working for "free".

I prefer to call it working for a non-profit.

Sucks knowing that you are suiting up every day to go out and bring back nothing.

That's why I left my last job!

Work 53 hours get paid for 25 some weeks, 30 the next, maybe 40 if I was lucky, then back to the teens!

Sucked!!

If you are going to work for free you might as well work for yourself at something you enjoy.

I drove all the way to St. Louis from Wisconsin just to find out 30% of my time would be uncompensated so I quit after a week. I have another interview closer to home on Monday...
