Yes - I do, but was covered once before at another dealer in Indiana, so they covered again since it was pre+existing. Dealer makes all the difference! Besides... It's not like that is normal wear. I'd say that a dealer that won't cover that is a cop-out.IMHO. YMMV. -BUELET

I called customer service at Buell - no go - and you're right, I consider it an abnormality. Brembo has no such problems at 10K miles. I think it should be covered, but they call it a wear item. I have seen other instances where the extended warranty covers it but the factory warranty won't. Can you say NTSB!

Correct. They are wear items, and it would be dealer discretion in order for it to be warrantied. Basically short of your problem happening at only 1000 miles, it won't be warrantied. On the other hand, I have a great dealer and they replaced mine no problem at 15k.

Correct - Rotors ARE wear items... But warped rotors are NOT normal wear. The dealer is definitely what makes the difference here!

IMHO - I'm pretty sure that most (if not all) of these dealers that deny fixing warped rotors because they are "wear" items, would have a different attitude if it were their bike, car, truck - whatever, if the shoe was on a different foot.

I can . . . but they have NOTHING to do with motorcycles. Perhaps you meant NHTSA, the group the promulgates standards, deals with recalls and so forth.

There is a bit of a semantics issue here.

NORMAL - is wear and tear. I just took my Ford F-150 2006 pickup in and the brakes were worn and I paid $1,200 to have new pads, rotors and the works. Ford never offered to pick up the tab and I'm not suggesting it warrants a recall.

ABNORMAL - would be a rotor or caliper than in "normal" (lack of abuse) service did not provide the expected service life or failed for some reason.

If you have work your rotor out or abused it, well it's your baby.

If your rotor has not provided proper (weather you know it or not, in your heart you really know what "normal" is) service then Buell would cheerly and promptly replace it.


I've gone back through and tried to find the original post. What happened with your brakes?

My brakes or Conchop?

Mine - Normal use. Mixed city/highway. Original pulsing started around 5K miles IIRC. I dealt with it until around 12K & by that time my front tire had succumbed to serious abnormal wear from the pulsing, which created egg shaped raised bumps around the center circumference of the tire, about 2-3" in length - every 2" approx. Selling dealer replaced the rotor under warranty, but the problem gradually returned over the next several thousand miles. This time I had it looked at again before the tire got the mumps!

I'm actively looking for the real reason this happens ONLY with my Uly and not our other bikes. If the pulsing returns, I plan on swapping the front tire/wheel assy from my 40K mile Lightning to try and isolate the source of the problem. (Of course, the dealer has already told me that replacing the front wheel will be their next step also.

(The dealer makes ALL the difference! *Assuming the manufacturer will back them up and I don't think that we have to worry about Buell looking for excuses to "save money"!)

**We have a '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee that early in life - had an issue where the reverse lights didn't come on 100% of the time. The service manager, after they couldn't duplicate the problem, told me that his diagnosis was that "we weren't shifting in to reverse (auto-trans) correctly. I found another dealership. Problem solved.

My original rotor began pulsating somewhere under 10,000 miles. After trying everything I could over the next 15,000 miles (short of replacing the rotor) and finding no permanent cure...I final replaced the rotor while upgrading to the ZTL2 caliper system.

I currently have over 10,000 miles with the new brake system...and no sign of any pulsating whatsoever (knock on wood). Maybe the ZTL2 system is better at disbursing heat, thus making it less susceptible to damage.

Of course after riding the Dragon (and other sweet roads in the area) with Ft_bsrd and Barker a couple years ago...I drastically changed my riding style where I now use a lot less front brake than I did before.

Has anyone else that upgraded to the ZTL2 system reported any pulsating issues (assuming that they replaced the old rotor as part of the upgrade)?

Maximum, I started getting some light pulsing after switching to ZTL2, but I blame it on my new addiction to stoppies.
