I have a 99 X1 and the lower header is not lining up to the bracket. I have a feeling I have the wrong bracket that is connected to the voltage rectifier or the header has been tweaked some how. I bought the bike like this and currently I am using a long bolt with large washers to keep it in place. I have a bushing that is supposed to go there but things just don't work out. The header is connected a to a V&H can if that matters, which I don't think it does. Again, looking for pictures so I can see if this is correct or not. I am not able to post pictures of my bike now. Thanks. Ed |

Is this the bracket you are referring to?

The header is probably rotated left or right too far. If so, you need to remove the exhaust and replace the exhaust gaskets. The gaskets get a "set" to them that will prevent you from moving the header very much. Getting them to seal in a different position is tough. Put in new ones.. Then loosely assemble everything. Get everything lined up properly they gradually tighten all the fasteners. You don't want ANY strain on the suppports especially the header bolts on the heads. 8ft lbs MAX on the stud nuts. |

Jim-Thanks for the picture but that is not the same bracket I have and if I am picturing mine correctly, that would be way to far back to hang the header I have. Brad-Thanks for that advise. I will try it when I get back home. |

Bluzm2: If you are not using GASKET,exhaust PN 17048-98, you are using HARLEY-DAVIDSON "CRAP" Gaskets !!! |

Buellistic, is that the tapered one or the flat one? What's the difference between the ones you get with a top end rebuild kit vs the one you mention above? Just wondering.. Brad |

Bluzm2: There was a picture posted on BWBers on a exhaust topic, "BUT" "i" do not remember where ??? There is a "BIG" difference between the HARLEY-DAVIDSON "CRAP" gasket PN 65324-83A ... The 17048-98 fits in the grove in the head for a perfect "FIT" ... After market exhaust systems have come with this type of gasket for "YEARS" !!! |

Taz, The stock 99's have the old flat style exhaust hanger, the one pictured above is the upgraded unit and will help keep you from tearing off your muffler's front bracket or breaking exhaust manifold bolts if you follow a similar routine to the one Bluzm2 has outlined. The big thing seems to be line it up loose and then gradually snug down. Opinions vary on doing that from the headers down or the rear bracket up... |
