I have an 06, 19,000 miles. On my ride last Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon. The cel came on intermittently but when increasing RPM went off however the frequency at which it came on increased over time. When starting the bike the light came on 4 sec as usual but did not come back on indicated a stored code, however by Monday afternoon the light would come on about 10 sec after the 4 sec light went out, indicating a stored code. As the ride progressed I needed to get higher RPM's to get light to go out. At first I only had to get to about 3100 at the end of the ride it would take getting up to about 4500. I also notices on my GPs that the Voltage was running between 13.5 and 14v. The fan had also started to make the leaf blower sound and had stopped all together by Sun night before that it had gone to very slow mode when the bike was shut down. Now several questions; where is the plug that I can jump wire the 1 and 2 pin to get the code #. 2) does this CEL patern resemble a fan going out? 3) I had thought that perhaps my battery was going bad, after resting when I turned the bike ignition on it showed 12.4v, again on the gps. I am going to replace the fan because it had stopped but before it had crashed it was making the death rattle sound for about a week. I am also going to find some place to test out the battery, and once I find the plug I am going to check out the stored code. Any ideas, suggestions, recommendations or previous experiences are welcome.

The code should be stored. The plug is on the left side near the footpegs. My guess is fan.

With the seat off the data connector is on the left side attached to the harness.Its a 4 wire connector,you have to jump 2 of the pins,can't remember the wire colors,do you have a S.M.

Yes I have the manual. That is how I knew about the jumper cable, it was just not clear as to where the connector is.

2006 manual, table of contents, Section 4.5 Check Engine Lamp Diagnostics, under "Retrieving Trouble Codes" Page 4-8, Line 1.

The procedure listed following that is accurate and precise and very easy. Isolating any stored codes isn't necessarily easy as I've been finding out the past two weeks.

My bike has NEVER in three years ever flashed an indication of stored codes, even though they've been in there...

I made the jumper wire, and got a code 36 - fan. Replaced the fan. Two big problems. 1 ,the front bolt on the ecm just spun and I could not get the ecm off so I just rotated it. 2 the connector wire for the fan is about an inch to short so needed to detach old fan and attach new wire through side slot just below air cover shroud. Not a fun job. seeing as how I have the bike up on my lift I think I will remove rear tire and replace wheel bearings.
