I bought a Fiamm horn (low tone) from NAPA and figured I'd just replace the stock horn with a louder one, but it is twice as thick and not nice and round like the stocker. So, while it'll mount up in the stock position, I'm sure the tire would hit it with more than a 3 inch bounce -- not ideal. Looking around for possible alternate mounting places, I couldn't find a good place that would provide a hidden, frame mounted spot like the stocker. Has anybody put an aftermarket horn on an 1125R/CR and, if so, where did you put it? | ||

I was thinking about putting the same horn on my R. If you figure out a good spot, please post a photo. | ||

I fitted a stebel horn under the saddle on a previous bike. It was so bloody loud that it didn't need to be at the front facing forward. I am looking at doing the same on my R. Having 139db was good, especially in busy city areas. | ||

I really like the Stebel compact horn. Mounting it under the seat might be ok as long as you don't get too big of a grin on your face ;+}. My Wife wants something more on her Civic and I was thinking about the Stebel. I was just going to change it and not tell her. LOL I can just see the face on this mild mannered 5th grade Teacher the 1st time she beeps her horn!!! Anyway, most of the time if you have to use your horn, it's too late anyway, even at 139db (think about it). Oh yeah with the exception of the odd dog or forest rat, I WOULD like to see them RUNAWAY! Hmmm, there are some fairly large vacant spaces under the seat that I've seen while routing wires for e-vest plugs and such. I'll have to check and see if there is a space large enough. Yessir, I believe that would put a BIG grin on this mug if it works! | ||

" Actually I honk my horn on my way into my property so that the unleashed dogs know I'm coming and head towards me early instead of popping up out of the tall grass. Works every time, gives me plenty of time to tease them. S/b fun the first time with the Stebel ;+} | ||

Well, I found a great spot to mount the FIAMM where it's hidden, frame mounted and clears all moving parts. A big plus is there's room to mount two horns (Hi tone & Low tone) in the area.  I've got it hanging from the fairing support bracket with the the horn's flared opening facing down towards the top of the fender. The flared part is mostly out of the airstream coming under the fairing. The black thing in front of the right fork is the horn:  I used 2 insulated steel #12 Umpco clamps with the rubber trimmed back where it would touch the horn in back.  The flared part clears the right fork lock to lock coming to about 1/16" at left lock. Pretty close I'll admit, but the rubber part of the clamp allows some give if need be.  Now that I've gone through all the work of finding a suitable mounting place, fabbing a mount and installing it, the horn doesn't work right. It puts out a laughable bleating noise, sounding no louder than a bicycle horn, the kind with a rubber ball you squeeze. I'll have to return it to NAPA and exchange it for one that works. Oh well... Waddya think? | ||

Before you go too far: 1: Try wiring the horn directly to the battery and see how it honks (may not have enough current carrying capability of the stock circuit, may need a relay). 2: Typically horns need to be able to vibrate, that's why the mounts are usually a few thin strips of metal sandwiched together. Your mounting may dampen it too much. Try step one with it unmounted. | ||

I tried it with a car battery after mounting it on the bike and it didn't work then. But I think you're right CC. I replaced the horn, found out it honks on the bench plenty loud. Mounted it on the bike using same bracket. Still wouldn't honk louder than a bleat. Found out if I loosened the mounting nut, it honks loud. Tried straightening out the bracket because it originally had a bend that touched the round metal part housing the transducer, figuring that the bracket was distorting the mechanism, but that didn't help. Still a bleater. So I tried putting the FIAMM in the stock location with its mount bracket mounted metal to metal to the frame and it honked loud. So I guess that confirms that it needs a solid mounting not a rubber mount. At this point the only way I think I can get it to work in my preferred location is to drill the fairing support bracket and the horn's bracket to fit. That's not what I intended to do with this project. So, back to square one. Thanks for the input. | ||

With typical design horns, the mounting is critical. If you have air powered horns mounting is not a concern for "sound" but it is a concern for the compressor life. I should have my Stebel in this weekend. Can't wait to scare the sh!t out of the dogs and forest rats!!! | ||

If only it were possible in a horn the size required for a motorcycle to duplicate the sound of a train... The fun I could have with that!! | ||

What?? What?? I can't hear you!! I tried out my Stebel this evening in my basement garage. I had my shooting ear muffs on and it still hurt my ears. My Wife was upstairs with the dogs and they went CRAZY when I honked the horn! I'll play with the mounting this weekend. Can't wait to .... well never mind ;+} Later Neil S. | ||

I removed the charcoal cannister and there's ready made room under the seat to mount the FIAMM on its bracket horizontally with the opening facing right using the center screw at the bottom of the pan. Even though it fits, it's a tight fit meaning I would probably have to trim the flared part a little to provide sufficient clearance for the seat bottom. Now, I wonder if I can cut the cannister in half... | ||

I found the ideal place to mount the horn using its bracket. There is an empty hole at the bottom rear of the left side pod. Actually the hole is for a press-fit clamp for, I believe, the data plug which always seems to come out. After mounting the horn, it looks to be shielded by the rad pod in the event of a left side laydown and it sort of almost blends with the styling of the pod. I'm thinking the best results would be if both the stocker (high note) and this Fiamm horn (low note) were powered from a relay which I also got from NAPA. If anyone wants to see pics of this latest mounting, say so. |
