Are you saying you're not sure if you have a clutch/trans issue or if it is fuel/ignition/motor issue?

What did you find when you sprayed the intake?

Bad intake seals, meaning you have not been replacing them every two years(with a cooling fan every 4 years)which is not in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL and HARLEY-DAVIDSON technicians do not have a clue about ...

This means let the MYSTERY problem questions begin !!!

THIS MEANS CHANGE THEM EVERY "TWO YEARS" EVEN IF THEY PASS THE WD-40 LEAK TEST !!!

Still don't have it narrowed down yet...

Like I said, only when the bike is under load(acceleration) It gives a kick or a stutter... sometimes one sometimes two, but not consecuatively in a row. Low gears 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, rolling on the throttle while getting on the highway.

Doesnt happen when putting around inner city slow speeds or cruising 65-80mph on highway, just on morderate to hard acceleration.

Belt tension good, belt good, pullys' good.
A slipping clutch feels more like prolonged lack of engagement.
Plugs and wires clean, connected.
VDSTS... no fault codes, everything checked out.
No intake leaks, sprayed chemical no change in idle, bike returns to idle after riding around.

I called the old man this morning who owns a sportster asking if he's ever encountered the same symptoms... He thought if it were the gearbox, then you would be able to hear something, and because "harley transmissions are the strongest components of the engine" he suggested checking out the intake butterfly/slide. I'm not looking forward to taking the primary cover off to prove him wrong.

Are the all wheelies coming back to haunt me?

I know what you're talking about...It's almost like it drops out of gear for a sec and then catches itself.

No idea what causes it, but mine only used to do it in first once in awhile, and became more and more frequent then occurring in 2nd gear...Now once the motor is done I am going to take a gander inside the tranny.

Hmmm. Mine is doing that same exact thing. It is only just when I shift into 3rd.

Mine doesn't do it all the time so I haven't bothered with it, about once a ride or 2.

It doesn't sputter but seems to loose drive and then catch. No noise other than a little rev like a false neutral.

I bet it's the original shift detent plate.

I hope this is the same problem and we all get it figured out.

Here is another GUESS, the SPRING PLATE(also known as the "GRENADE PLATE") PN 37977-90 as it goes bad it causes clutch holding problems, plus adjustment problems ...

Should be replaced with two STEEL PLATEs PN 37913-90 and one FRICTION PLATE PN 37911-90 ...

This is a "PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT" to all SPORTSTER clutches 2000 and before ...

In 2001 the "GRENADE PLATE" was removed from SPORTSTER clutches, the BLAST and XB clutches never had it ...

Thanks Buellistic, but I know a clutch problem and this is not the clutch.

It only happens in 3rd and not at full throttle and not when going very slow. My bike still launches great in first from a stop.

Skntpig:

You have a 1997 S1, so here is what you try ...

Take your SLIDE "NEEDLE" out and go to a model air plane store and get a little container on flat washers that will just fit over your needle to raise it about 0.050 of an inch(two of the thinest)

"i" did this to my needle and it took away what is called the Keihin "COUGH" which is what you may have ???

Let us all know if that corrected the problem ???

When my bike seemed to "skip", or freewheel in 3rd, I ended up replacing the shift forks.

Shkntpig:

Now if it is all these gears that it is jumping out of, IMHO you should replace not only the SHIFTER DRUM ASSEMBLY "AND" the assoiate'd gears ... "BUT" you can not tell how bad anything is until you get the transmission out !!!

THIS IS A TOUGH TRANSMISSION and IMHO ALL THIS CAN NOT BE GOING WRONG IF YOU HAVE KEPT THE PROPER OIL LEVEL IN IT ...

My number 13 foot destroyed my LOW GEAR and it took the SHIFTER DRUM and the gears assoiate'd with 1st gear to fix it of which "i" did myself !!!

I say engagement dogs are rounded and worn, But shifter forks is still a possibility as well.

Since new in 97 it has always shifted into 3rd different than any other gear. It has always had a small extra hitch felt on the shifter. Of course no tech while under warranty could feel it.

This isn't the symptom I'm talking about but I'm sure they could be related. It seems to hit a false neutral and then goes into gear without me doing anything. It only takes about 1 second.

I have always kept the fluid full.

It only happens in 3rd, and not all the time.

Has the OEM PLATE,detent PN 33656-90 been "UP-DATED" to the PN 33656-90A ???

This makes for better shifting ...

"ALSO" if you adjust the primary chain "TOO TIGHT"(FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL is "WRONG")it makes for "CRAPPIE SHIFTING" and clutch operation ...

3/4" on the chain tight spot !!!
