My wife is a girl scout leader of two troops and planned a canoe trip at a state park North of Ft. Wayne. I planned to join them after work on Thursday.
On the way there while riding down a country road I had the thrill of a young buck dashing out from a corn field across my bow. I braked and just clipped his rear hooves. He vanished in the woods to my left. Once my heart rate dropped below 1000 bpm, I said a quick prayer of thanks.
There have been two H-D deaths in the area this summer due to bike-deer collisions with both riders not wearing helmets. One occurred on an interstate highway which should have provided some warning due to the distance between the pavement and the fence. While I was in full dress the thought of tangling with a deer is an unpleasant one to say the least.
Just a reminder to keep deer in mind when riding between 6-8pm and at dawn in states where deer are present.
There is or was someone from the BadWeb that had a moose fly over his bike after being hit by an SUV, in front of him, as I recall. Maybe, it was a deer....whatever...perhaps, someone can add further details to the story.
My dad hit a deer this year on his V-star or should I say the deer hit him. They were riding on the coalfield expressway in WV and out came the deer. It hit his crash bar, him in the leg and my mom in the leg. The bike did nit even hardly move when they hit. Here are some pics.
The pesky things are all over the place. We just had a deputy sherrif hit one on his bike on the way into work. He came off his bike and got run over by a semi!
I really hate deer, they need to open a road hunting season, one where you can shoot from your car at deer that are within 100 yards from any roadway.
The AAA has lobbied successuflly to have the antlerless and antlered deer licenses doubled but it only makes the deer hang out by the roads where it is safe and not in the woods where they should be. Just this spring I was walking the girlfriend through her parents neighborhood and 6 deer were browsing on the neighbors shrubs. There are not alot of predators in the neighborhoods as the human and dog scent scare the coyotes off. That goes for the sides of the roads, the coyotes just don't hang out along the sides of the roads.....
I have hit deer with my truck without one, and since installing, never since. Since it's an air flow-thru whistle, though, they won't work until about 30 mph.
Could be snake oil, for all I know. But they seem to work for me.
Poor thing? Well deer don't get too big in the South, about the size of a large Grayhound. Up North you wouldn't say poor thing as they can easily clear 200 pounds thanks to the field corn and soy bean crops as a ready food source. The season should be opened up with a longer season and increased limits. The car deer acccidents are on the rise and the biker deaths due to deer collisions are up dramatically this year (around here). If I were in good condition after htting a deer, I would be forced to field dress it and prepare to make lots of summer sausage.
My point was that most don't fair so well after hitting or being hit by a 200 pound speeding bullet with fur. When there are no cagers to watch there are probably deer.
