On enquiring about "BUELL 2000-2002 S3T shallow city saddlebag covers/lids. These are now restricted items from BUELL." on ebay... I was informed by the seller; "Buell now asks for vin number for the luggage parts to confirm that they are for an actual S3..This is new and was told to me by the local Buell dealer." ANyone heard of such a policy now? Seems ridiculous to me or possibly misinterpreted due to the p/n issue with the pre/post '99 lids. DAve | ||

It's just my guess and I'll see if I can find out, but I'd guess the V.I.N. tracking (as Harley-Davidson Motor Co. does with some parts) results from an effort to increase customer satisfaction. The Buell saddlebags were updated a number of times in direct response to owner input and comments. a special engineering team, with Dave and Doug two of Buells brightest, decided to make a brave move that included running improvements. A great deal of what influenced this was DIRECT INPUT from owners, a benefit attibutable to Buell close contact (BattleTrax, Erik attending events and the LC research) with their customers. Buell may not have always been right, but they've ALWAYS been RIGHT THERE and ready to listen. The saddlebags are an EXPENSIVE item. One of the unique things about expensive items is that if consumers wait on them (see Patricia Seybold) and they arrive and don't fit, there is an elevated level of owner dissaffection. I'm guessing, but if I were involved in the program, I'd want the V.I.N. to insure the prodcut I shipped fit the bike it was shipped for. By the way, this process of taking ongoing improvements to the production line is pretty ballsy and not common. Buell owners asked for it and Buell did some amazing thing. I don't KNOW that this is the right explanation, but my bet is that Buell and Harley-Davidson (arguably one of the most powerful marketing forces in the world) didn't do this to make it more difficult for people to send them money. He didn't. Everything was on university or military servers and all bulletin boards were on compu$erve and all users used a 4x40 display on radio shack trs-80's and the navigation tool of the day was lynx or gopher. GPS stood for GoPartySomemore. | ||

I couldnt even imagine trying to surf on something like the old Texas Instruments TI or a Commodore 64, what a couple of piles those things were. Hmmm first wheeled vehicle www site....no idea but I will guess it was a skateboard company. | ||

The discussion of old websites reminds me of something that I have been meaning to post for a while. Some time ago I saw a post on here lamenting the fact that Buell did not offer archived versions of their old sites. Well there is an organization that does this for almost ALL sites (yes, that's a lot), and has been doing so since 1996. To quote from their site: "The Internet Archive, working with Alexa Internet, has created the Wayback Machine. The Wayback Machine makes it possible to surf more than 10 billion pages stored in the Internet Archive's web archive. The Wayback Machine was unveiled on October 24th, 2001 at U.C. I thought it was VERY COOL that Erik had his company on the internet back in '95 and he was so accessible. I remember seeing the 96 S1 on the Buell website back in '95 and emailing Erik questions about availability in SoCal. He promptly answered followed by a more detailed answer by Scott Miller stating when they should be arriving and that I should stop by the Anaheim show to see all the new models. Well, I did, and when I saw the video of the Lightning and how far it could lean into turns and effortlessly wheelie down the straights, I was blown away! I promptly put a deposit on a Lightning at the nearest dealer who had one ready for sale. Then while breaking in the new bike, I emailed Erik again with comments and questions. I said I was having fun breaking it in, & that the new bike generated praiseworthy attention, & asked questions about accessories, carb difference rationale between S2 & S1, & tank bag interference with the tank vent hose. Re the latter, he replied, "Maybe the vent could be modified to a 90 degree fitting, but we haven't done it." So perhaps if my email contributed to BMC's change to 90 degree fittings on later models, y'all can blame me and this (then) new fangled thang called the internet. Sparky | ||

Very cool link MikeJ... Great stuff. And that answered another question for me... I helped a buddy replace a leaking rocker box gasket (err... I mean valve cover gasket ) on an old Yamaha Radian (600cc UJM) I sold him, and have most of a tube of yamabond left over. I was thinking of using it to put on the next primary cover gasket I install. Sounds like it would be safe. | ||

Reep, Yamabond, Ahh yes, brings back old memories! Number one and two, don't remember which one was which.... killed off those brain cells long ago... I used MANY tubes of the red and silver stuff back in my dirt bike racing days. No center gaskets on the two stroke cases, just Yamabond (red if memory serves). Stuff worked great! I used to use it on every Honda or Yamaha I ever worked on. The old CR125's and 250's used to eat 2nd and 3rd gears when you bumped up the horsepower. It got so that I could do a tranny rebuild in about 30 minutes if the motor was out of the bike. A couple of forks, a couple of gears, check the clearances and slap it back together. Had them back in the bike before the Yamabond set! Even stopped using clutch cover gaskets, just gooped them and tightened down the screws. I can still smell the stuff if I think about it... Stuff would probably work great on a primary cover... Brad | ||
