Hello Everyone, This is my first post. I'm looking to buy a Buell XB12X or XT but will need to have an electric shifter installed due to muscular dystrophy. I physically can't work that clutch all day. 1. What brand electric shifter do you recommend? 2. Do I also need a slipper clutch to handle downshifts without locking the rear tire or over revving the engine? 3. If they make a slipper clutch for the Thunderstorm engine, what brand do you recommend? Live well. Love much. Laugh often. Crash106 |

Okay, well, I ran an advanced Google search of the Buell.com website checking for the phrase "slipper clutch" and found there certainly IS a slipper clutch available factory direct for the X bikes. HOWEVER, this is a "racing license only" part and costs about $1,000 plus new racing clutch plates, a special tool and new fluids. So, yes and no. There is a part, but it's damned expensive and it's only available for racers (at least for now). I wonder just how bad I need this thing. |

Hi Crash I don't know the characteristics of an electric shifter so I don't know how smoothly they disengage. What I can say is that the tuning on XBs is such that it doesn't have the harsh engine braking normally associated with big V-Twins. Your experience with the way you have set up earlier bikes would be a good guide to making some sort of prediction on the need for a slipper clutch. Have you needed to install one before for example. |

According to several web-sites that sell them, they cost $1190, and one can use the OEM plates. According to the Drag Specialties reference, the same part fits all Buells, tube and XB. |

Hi Guys, EBR has the STM slipper clutch for $999.00 to who ever want's it. part# X0036.06AH. For your use, it has different main engagement and back torque limiting spring rates available to better fine tune from a full-on high performance or race application to setup that needs to add a little cushion every time you shift. If you end up getting one, it takes a special install tool at an extra cost. I have one that I can loan you for the project if it pans out. safe riding mike http://www.erikbuellracing.com/store/parts-accesso ries/powertrain/xb-slipper-clutch.html |

Hey Crash, Another thing you might look into is since most all electric solenoid actuated shifters are pretty "snappy" in their action, hence your inquiring about a slipper clutch, You may try looking into putting a small nitrogen charged "bumper shock" on the linkage so that even thou the solenoid would disengage quickly, it would re-engage slower because the bumper shock would cushion and slow the clutches re-engagement. You should be able to set it up to "let the clutch out" in say, 1 or 1 1/2 or 2 seconds etc to give you plenty of slip on both taking off from a stop, and safe down shifting if you didn't get the rpm's matched up so good. Might be a better solution than a thousand dollars for a slipper clutch that's not really designed for your needs. Just a thought. mike |
