....fluid level too high? I thought i read that somewhere.... any ideas? Last time i checked, the dealer had the fluid level to where it poured out of the clutch inspection cover. I removed a lot and brought the level down to just touching the gear teeth.... |

Check your primary chain tension. Sounds like it is set too loose/tight, and once it warms up it is way out of spec. |

Fluid will come out of the cover if it's on the side stand. It should be checked with the bike up right. As Froggy suggested, check the primary chain tension. |

+1 on the primary adjustment..also double check the clutch adjustment..normally the clutch will engage at the end of lever travel...if it engages close to the grip, you have too much slack. If the clutch does not release cleanly when you shift, it will cause the symptom. Buell clutches tend to drag some when hot.. and we have truck transmissions..there is a lot of rotating mass in there...be sure to shift with authority... |

Mine has the same thing going on, only not as rough as yours. My primary is to be checked soon. |

k thanks. fluid poured out wit the bike upright, not on sidestand. I corrected that. I thought I had my chain right, but who knows.... the clutch is adjusted right for sure. the chain is open to interpretation it seems. I do shift with authority, thats the only way it will shift. I need to re-check my fluid level i guess. |

My XB9S always had downshifting clunks when the tranny was hot, unless I downshifted firmly and before coming to a stop. There were some pretty loud CRUNCHES until I got tough with it. |

Sounds like a dragging clutch to me. |

its the famous 1st to 2nd gear change that's the most trouble. |

1st to 2nd has always been alittle clunky for me since day one. Mostly when shifting in higher RPM's. If i shift in the 2,500-3,000 RPM range its fine. |

Both my 04 12s and 04 9s need to be short shifted into second when hot to avoid the "crunch". Have ridden others that are the same. A 2500 rpm shift seems to work best. When cold - shifts like butter! My 06 9s shifted great hot/cold into 2nd but always clunked into 3rd (helical cut gears in trans). Fluid levels, chain adj had no effect whatsoever on the 2nd gear hot crunch and both these bikes were near brand new when I bought them. |

I had pretty bad problems with crunchy/missed shifts..on one ride I nearly crashed twice due to missed shifts coming out of corners... The symptoms indicated a dragging clutch when hot...in tandem with a "clunky" gearbox design (or more correctly..executed). I took the clutch apart, expecting to find obvious problems or damage...nope...no warped or overheated steels...no baked fibers...no damage or warping of the diaphragm spring, etc... In anticipation of the clutch teardown, I had bought a new clutch kit from Energy One...so I installed it to see if it made any difference...I installed the kit and properly adjusted everything and installed new oil...used Mobil-1 v-twin oil...that made a huge difference in how it behaves...it did not magically make it shift like an import bike...but a lot better..but no more missed gears or grinding... |
