I have the Jardine CF pipe on my bike and love it. It has held up very well but it's getting really loud now. I think I have around 6k miles on it so far. I would like to repack it but want to look at some alternatives to buying Jardine muffler packing. Is there muffler packing material that I can just buy at Home Depot? Fiberglass insulation, steel wool, etc? Or do I need actual muffler packing? Does the brand matter? Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks! -Mike | ||

Another alternative guys is to use a very course steelwool or SSteel wool and pack it in very tight. The course wool will not deteriorate very fast and not burn out easily, especially the SS, and very inexpensive at any hardware store. Just a little louder then fiberglass but more durable from blowout. Hard to beat that price though Brandon. | ||

The fmf repack fiber stuff is pretty cool. Its tough and its stringy fiber yarn, comes in a big bag and you just shove it in around the baffle. Pack it in tight and it should be good. I repacked my old jardine with it, worked fine. That stuff is the 4 stroke packing, so it has to put up to the abuse of 250 and 450 thumpers. | ||

I recently repacked my Jardine for the very same reason. I used a "Moose Racing" stainless packing kit which comes with a fine stainless mesh to wrap the core, then stainless wool and finally long strand fiberglass. The kit even included a dozen rivets and the quantity of materials was perfect for a very tight repack. I used to have to put a quiet insert in before on longer trips, but no more! It made a huge difference. I highly recommend. | ||

Thanks foe the suggestions! I bought a 500g bag of Moose Racing "Competition" muffler packing. Looks like it made of long yarn-like strands of fiberglass so it should work well. It should be here in a few days, I'll post the results! | ||

So I just repacked the muffler this evening and found something disturbing. The Jardine still had about 90% of the fiberglass packing material left inside of it, even after ~6000 miles. About 50% of the wire mesh was gone though. I repacked it anyways, reusing the metal screen around the baffle. I used a full 500g pack of the Moose Racing muffler packing, and probably could have used about 100g more. The muffler is still just as loud but seems to be less raspy. I put RTV on the pipe so I'm going to let it dry overnight and ride it to work tomorrow and see how it sounds. I'll make another post then. | ||

So the new muffler packing appears to have made the pipe louder overall. The only quieter part is cruising on the freeway, which is probably most important. Oh well, live and learn. |
