Hey all..Just swapped my FLH for a 99 X1 Lightning with 1100 miles. As I'm waiting for the snow to melt here in NY, figure it was time to ask everyone about good mods for the Lightnings. First order of business is getting a pipe that sounds like a Harley should sound, at least to me (long time Harley rider) Any tips and suggestions much appreciated. Thanks! | ||

Great bike, you're going to enjoy it. Here are some ideas of what to consider, this is not intended to scare you or make you believe your bike is going to fall apart, it's not. (Pre # 1) Buy a service manual. (1) Are all of the recalls done? See information here. (2) Some upgrades might be a good idea, most are mentioned at the X1 Files - primary chain tensioner, shift detent plate, shifter, throttle cable clamp, re-route the breather hoses from the airbox... (3) Possible problems - leaking rocker-boxes, isolators, oil pump drive gear, leaking shock... Again check the X1 Files and search the archives here for a good idea of what to plan for. (4) You should figure out what you plan to do for the intake and exhaust and combine this with the Race ECM at the same time. It is almost a requirement for any modified DDFI Buell. You will need to go to your dealer after you install these items and have what is called a "TPS re-zero", this is not what actually happens, but what it's called at your dealer. Search the archives here for much discussion about this. (5) I have the Force exhaust, it's a complete system, not a slip on muffler. I don't know that I would consider this a muffler! I get compliments on the exhaust note quite often, not exactly Harley, but sounds good. Lot's of other pipes and stories available in this regard, look around, others will pipe (I kill me!) in. (5) After that ride it, then figure out what to do next. Many great sponsers here will help you get to the end you want. I have had a lot of experience with Nallin Racing, a Buell expert for sure (I cannot figure out why Buells are not in the front of the new catalog! (smiley here)), he has spent time talking to me before and after my project and helped me through a few problems as well. I cannot compliment them enough. Ask questions as you need to, you will not be at a loss for opinions and suggestions around here. Jeff | ||

Congrats on the Buell! I have both H-D & Buell, but find myself riding my S3T more often (14k last year alone) and using the H-D for HOG related rides. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to ride a Buell with a group of H-D cruisers. The Buell will give you a rush like no other bike you've ridden - Enjoy it! GOMO | ||

I think I'd strongly consider Daves offer for the race kit if I were you! Seems like a very fair price and it does make a noticable difference in the performance of the bike. plus you get a new exhaust can with the deal as it comes with the race kit. If you want it to sound more like a Harley, install the new can eventually it will blow the packing out and be very similiar to the sound you are looking for. Don't ask me how I know  | ||

Just discovered that the '99 underseat tray doesn't have drain holes in it, and later models do. My fuse/relay panel in rusted from rain water being trapped in the tray - later models have holes cast in both front edges (as shown in pictures). I bought the complete rear fender (tail light, tray, tail light, etc...) off eBay, came off a 2001, AFAIK.  John | ||

Thanks...Been kicking Dave's offer around. Sucks being broke Still plaing catch up from stroking my 85 FXWG the end of last year. Time to go digging in the parts pile to see what I can off on ebay for Buell $$$. |
