I'm curious as to what's the advantages between the race ECM and the stock I've only installed a high flow air filter and a D&D muffler the bike runs awesome BUT! if I were to install a race ECM would that REALLY wake up the bike.

you NEED a race ecm to complete this setup. Your running too lean and could burn something up.!! More air in and out requires the race ecm or a tuned one.... converted oem stocker to race ecm via ecm spy. I still havent gotten around to doing it.

flxmanlethal - don't waste money on a race ecm. you can use ecmspy to load whatever fuel maps you want onto the ecm you already have.

ecmspy is free and the cable required to use it is about $60 from American Sport Bike. From what I've heard, it's getting hard to find download sources for ECMspy but I'm sure you can still track down a copy.

I don't think you'll find a race ECM for $60.

I have the cable and ecmspy and have been on it many times looking at the different screens and the numbers they come up with from my bike. I have even read the web site directions many times and made back-up copies of my stock ecm. My problem is, I'm not familiar enough with the program to make any changes. Even though I have read the directions (if you can call them that) they make no sense to me. The copies on my stock ecm that I saved were in two files; one is a EPR file and one is a text document with all the number settings on it. A friend emailed the race ecm settings to me but is was only one file (EPR) and I have had no luck loading this file to my ecm. Maybe I'm just dense but the ecm tuning guide I have is of no help to me. I have read it repeatedly but have gotten no closer to making it work. I'm at the point that I want to just buy a race ecm and get it over with. It May be more money but it's alot less frustration (for me anyway).

Remember that you don't want to "rewrite" your EEPROM. Meaning you don't need to "load" the EPR file(s). Just "load" the fuel maps (the .msq file) and it will also load the timing maps.

The following is from Jose, is anything missing? He didnt send me a .msq file. All I have is a 3kb text file and a 1 kb .epr file so this is comflicting to me too. The aussie site still has some ecm spy ifo but the UK site seems to have totally wiped out all Ecm spy talk. Unreal!!

First say you there are two firmware version Stock ECM: Buell JA120 (X1-USA version) and the other one KA210 (X1-internationally version), both are Stock ECM but they have different ignition mapping and fuel, but the same Eeprom.

You'll run with JA120 there, the Buell Race ECM is the same for worlwide and the Race ECM raises rev limiter 500 RPM and has different ignition mapping and fuel mapping than a stock ECM.

Always backup the ECM the first time you connect to your Buell, Save this file and back it up to a safe location, CD or another machine! This file is essential if anything goes wrong and you need to recover your ECM.

You must to save the Eprom file Text in the Eprom Folder ECMspy and then open it from the software ECMspy and load it to the bike "You have to load the file text only", not file EPR.

Reminder: only loading the eeprom file, not the fuel maps and ignition curves.

NOTE: after loaded it then reset the tps and then reset the afv to 100%, Ok?

You have no doubt your bike if has exhaust and intake high flow air filter mods will run much better with a Race ECM, but If you haven't modified your bike in any way from standard you'll run richer.

Thank's for the info. I picked up a Race ECM pretty cheap so I am going to try it instead of messing with my stock one. Besides, living in California you never know when they might change the laws about what you can and can't have on your bike and actually check them. If I need to I can just pop the stock one back on.

Brains,

I need your superior intellect and experience.

I just purchased a very well sorted and nicely equipped 99 S3T off of Ebay. It has Forcewinder intake, Buell Race header/can, race ECM, and a few other bits.

My question is: Is the race ECM a learning ECM? The bike was set up in Reno, NV (Well above sea level), I moved it to New Orleans (Well below sea level) will it adjust the AF ratio on its own? I fear a super lean situation could end my wonderful motor early.

Thanks

Yes it is a "learning ECM" about 10 minutes at 3,000 rpm or above and you're good to go.

BTW nice looking bike, whats the headlight off of?

I'm tellin ya it's nut's here in Calif. Todays paper had an article talkin about a bill they want to pass about how loud your bike can be and that you would have to put the stock pipes back on or get a ticket. WHO THE HELL STILL HAS THEIR STOCK PIPES LYING AROUND?!? You can have a stereo in your car that destroys your hearing and can hear the bass thump for miles but you can't have a loud motorcycle!!! I think maybe all California Politicians should be shot (but that's just my opinion)!!!

I have been told it works better to tune it at sea level and then bring up to altitude, I have no idea about the other way around.

As for the headlight, I don't know what the original owner did. it looks like an XB projection unit.

I hope the learning curve is quick, it's very hot down here and the air is thick. It seems to be running great. I can't believe I never had a Buell before now, I am so impressed. I describe it to my friends as "It feels like a bike designed by an engineer who is a rider, rather than a marketing department rooted in the fifties."

Joe, your bike looks great! I know exactly what you mean when you describe your first Buell contact. Happened to me the same way. Back in 2001 I bought a 99 X1 on ebay....and the addiction continues... You might want to look at a smoked Zero Gravity Touring windscreen to replace the bubble you have on your bike. IMHO that would make your bike look even better. Welcome to the madness! Cornel
