Bah. I just got my bike back from the shop, and it's throwing an error code - the first I've seen since I got the bike. While I may send the thing back in to be fixed, I'd sure like to see if I can avoid being without my bike for a(nother) week. The code is COMM ERROR U0001. The tech said it has something to do with the serial port, but he couldn't tell me anything more without putting it on the Digi-Tech --- in a few days. He said it might reset if I unplugged the battery for 10 minutes, but it's still there. Anybody know the exact meaning of the code? Anybody have any diagnostic tips? |

when I bought my 08 last August, I had the same error code display on the instrument cluster. Techs determined that the serial port output from the computer to the cluster was bad. No communication between the two. They had to order a new ECM and install. Are you having other issues with the cluster? |

Ha ha shit. Yes. I had the 08 cluster replaced with an 09 (this one) because of the parasitic battery drain, which is still happening, maybe worse. Did you have to leave your bike in the shop while waiting for the new cluster to arrive? |

I had my cluster replaced and they just ordered it and called me when it was in. Then They installed while I waited for it. |

they had my bike for 5 weeks for the cluster and a bad IAT sensor! |

Call the dealership and start yelling, it made my warranty wait time go down from 4.5 weeks to 3 as they put it on the lift the next day after driving to another dealership to get the parts I was waiting on. |

From what I understand, the problem is not with the instrument cluster. The communication error is from the ECM to the cluster. The ECM will need to be replaced. Nothing to do with either an 08 or 09 cluster. In my case, the bike still started and ran fine. I did ride it some with the message on the display. The dealer ordered a new ECM and when it came in, I took the bike in and waited while they replaced ECM and re-programmed. Rode the bike home a couple of hours later. The dealers do have a way to expedite parts from the factory. Should be able to get parts in a few days, not weeks. Unless there is a backorder. |

Paraphrasing from the Electronic Diagnostic Manual, ECM sets condition U0001 if it loses communication to the insturment cluster. If the fault happened when the ignition was off, "Theft Error" is set. If the fault happened when the ignition was on and communication between ECM and IC was occurring, "Comm Error" is set. If you have "Comm Error" then shut the bike off and restart, it becomes "Theft Error". The fault tree is very explicit. Dispositions range from replacing the ECM to replacing the IC, as well as a number of short / open circuit possibilities. I may be a mechanical engineer, but I must admit that this electronics manual is really interesting reading. Very informative. |

i have had that code come up here and there on my bike and it doesn't affect anything and will go away on its own.you can unplug ic and make a nine second pass.also i have yet to see an 08 with this parasitic drain problem everyone is talking about.to those that have had this problem how long did your bike sit before the battery was dead. |

Belltech6, reset the the service counter on an 08 with the original cluster then just turn the bike off and test. You will see the parasitic drain. Go into diagnostic mode after that and exit back to normal mode then turn the switch off and the drain will be gone. |

Not sure if that was posted before, but that's a great amount of information to fit into 2-3 sentences. |

Yep, could consistently reproduce it and correct it with the procedure I posted above. By the way I have an early 08 build (first week of production). I have since replaced the cluster with an 09 cluster and have no more problems. |

Buelltech6, when I had the parasitic drain problem I found it was about 176mA. I rode it from work back home and about a day and a half later the starter would just click. I only had the battery run down 2 times in like 4 months and the third time I had a monitor system on the bike. I caught the draw before the battery was dead and found the cluster problem. Just cycling the ignition switch or interrupting the power seemed to make the draw go away for a while. I also had the U0001 set on my bike and the cluster displayed "comm error" but that was because the battery was weak and while cranking the voltage would drop low enough to cause communication problems. The bike would still start with the battery voltage low enough to set the U0001 code. |

i had the same symptoms as Chevycummins. when battery was left to drain itself the comm error u0001 woulod invariably show up and then leave with repeated use of the bike. i put the bike on a tender once a week now and have never seen it again. same battery and 08 cluster. tim |

FWIW: Checked the diagnostics today, and it showed "NO CODES." I believe this implies I've performed 50 "clean starts" without an error. My hypothesis is that during my last service - in which a faulty ignition switch was replaced - the tech triggered the code and did not clear it. I'll post up again if the code returns. |

Can anyone advise me as to: 1) How to pull up the error codes on my 2009 1125R. 2) A list of error codes. 3) Procedure to clear error codes. Thanks in advance |
