I just noticed on the ecmspy site it says its closed. http://www.ecmspy.com/ when you go to downloads it says"With the end of the project, the software is not available for download any more. ANY DISTRIBUTION OR HOSTING OF OUR SOFTWARE ON OTHER SERVERS IS PROHIBITED!"} Get it while you can..... |

I have a few copies of it floating around on various computers, but I'll probably end up hosting it if those links go dead |

I doubt it, they didnt steal anything.. and its not illegal to modify a map on an ecm. think of all the companies that sell chips / flashes for car ecu's.. if this was illegal, it would shutdown an entire industry |

Maybe they got bought out by Buell? Black helicopters circled them?

I think they had an issue with Xopti using the software to make maps, and then charging a fee for those maps. |

Umm... look up DMCA(digital millennium copyright act). I'm no Lawyer, but I'd guess modifying the map in the ECM is against the DMCA. |

So what about Direct Link? You can modify the map with that and it's still on the market. |

Are you profiting from it? Then it's probably illegal. |

Uh, it's the EPA that makes map mods illegal. |

I think they had an issue with Xopti using the software to make maps, and then charging a fee for those maps. I think you may be the closest to being right. Xopti wasn't the only person doing something similar. The worst was a guy that took the software to do his own thing. You can't take freeware and change it to make profit. That ain't how it works. Freeware is Free, as in Free Speech, not FREE! as in FREE BEER! I don't blame them one bit. A lot of work went into that, a lot of people contributed to the project, then offered to the public free of charge, even cared enough to help people, and even refined to program. All so some less than honest people could take it, and try to profit from it. If I were hosting the program on my server, I'd take it down. Those that have tried to profit from using the freeware, are still hosting the program for download are probably on a list on some lawyer's desk... |

sucks they took it down... just ordered a cable lol. IMO what Xopti was doing was charging a fee for the time and his ability to make those maps and there is nothing wrong with it. He is not charging for the program, or making some small change to it and calling it his own. |

Xopti is not a bad or "less than honest" person he was merely doing a service that many could not or did not want/know how to perform on their bikes. If there was a company "buell" doing remaps and dialing in buells for 100$ then he wouldnt have to do their job for them. Theres still software out there and shutting ecmspy down is like closing the barn door after the cows got out. |

When I asked my salesman to ask around for updated information about the possibility of a Race ECM for my 2008 XB9SX, someone from Buell called him asking who I was and why I was inquiring. |

I hope you said "because I want one, duh" I wonder how this is going to effect Xopti's business. If he already has the software what's to stop him from continuing to create maps? Asking because I need one. So Xopti if you're listening, send me a PM. Thanks. |

Buell called him asking who I was and why I was inquiring. They probably wanted to know if you were a racer, and if you were in their data base already. When you get your race license and get on Buell's data base, you are eligible to buy "race only" parts. |

OK maybe Xopti isn't one of the few that have ruined a good thing. He should however take the program down from the server. |

ECM Spy's been a great "Buell" feature to me. Months ago I e-mailed Gunter, asked how I could contribute $$ to support software & its availability. No reply. Seems making something available free is a certain means to reduce its for-profit sales. |

There are several different "open source" licenses. Some, philosophically aligned with the "Free Software Foundation", believe that non shared code is immoral. As a result, they have license clauses that say if you modify (or increasingly to a degree if you even just use) software they created, you must share your software in the same way on the same terms. These are licenses like the GPL V3 and the Affero public license. Ironic, huh? You are not free to use software in ways that do not match their "free software" agenda. Other groups feel that they really just want to give stuff away. About the only restriction they place on it is that you can't claim you wrote it, or prevent anyone else from sharing it. This camp believes they are free to do what they want with their work, and you are free to do what you want with your work. These are the "BSD license", the "Apache License", etc. Calling it Shareware sucks the worst. You don't know *what* you signed up for when you use it. They can give away the software, but they (unless they specifically give them up) retain their IP rights. And they can stuff whatever license terms they want in there. So just the fact that ECMSpy was "free" really tells us nothing. If he really wanted it to be viral (and cause people selling maps for it to be also forced to give them away for free) he should have used something like the Affero license. |

I dont care if the software is free. The software merely lets you get access to your ECM and change it around. What Xopti is doing is creating something completely different from the software, maps. His own personal maps that HE created, so HE should be able to sell them at a price if he wanted. (Message edited by juniorkirk on June 15, 2009) |

Here is what Gunter put up on his "about" page: Frankfurt, June 2009 After almost four years of development the developers decided to shut down the ECMSpy project. Various reasons led to this decision, including the increasing drain on the developers' time. Exploring the ECM and learning how it works has been lots of fun, very informative and allowed us to better understand how it works and where some of the commonly known flaws lie. It's my heart's desire to thank all contributors, translators, information-diggers for their much appreciated help. Without your support this project would not have been possible. Gunter Gunter and his team did an outstanding job with this project. They busted their buns to figure out the ECM, and provide a free tool to us. And for that... THANKS GUNTER AND THE ECMSPY TEAM! I'm bummed that you guys ended the project... but I understand why. (Message edited by RATyson on June 15, 2009) (Message edited by RATyson on June 15, 2009) |

I'm sure the Mr. Honest Guy would see things in a different light if he were subject to a $100,000 per modified motorcycle penalty. While there is much good in this . . . it would also be dandy if 3 of you would send me your paychecks this week. |
