Just got the word from the Buell dealer my orange muffler is not rusted through (no holes in it) so not covered under warranty. Is this a new policy or ??? Just wondering what others have experienced. Guess it's time to shake up the BBQ paint can. Wish there was a durable solution to this - some have even reported ceramic coated stock mufflers rust over time. j | ||

Warranty claims are done on a case by case basis. What one dealer would warranty another one wouldn't. All mufflers even aftermarket ones will rust eventually. The header on my pretty $1000 Micron is rusting a bit. | ||

My muffler rusted from end-to-end within 6 months of ownership and my dealer replaced it under warranty; no questions asked. I suggest putting up a good fight, as well as going directly to Buell customer service. | ||

It's too darn bad that someone didn't have a rusty Uly muffler for Erik to sign at Homecoming. Can you imagine setting that on that autograph table with a straight look on your face. Now that would have sent a message. I had my muffler replaced on warranty but it would probably been better to just remove and repaint since it really was only surface rust. I wonder what happened to all those rusty cans. Are they sent back to the factory by the dealer or is the dealer directed to just shiitcan them?? Has anyone ever had one galvanize dipped or is that process even available. I coated mine with never-seize and it seems to be doing the trick. I had a few people stop and stare at my bike at Homecoming and I think they were wondering what the heck was with my muffler but were reluctant to ask. It kind of looks like it was galvanized. I did the same to my pipes and the pipes look real nice as if they have a ceramic coating. | ||

Any pics handy? I seem to have rusty muffler syndrome and have been contemplating different solutions. I would like to see what it looks like. | ||

I BBQ painted mine, but it didn't last. I just noticed it again while looking at some pics from the Dragon. June, 2008:  May 2009:   Granted, some of that is just mud, but you can see the rust around the welds. | ||

Has anyone ever had one galvanize dipped or is that process even available Yea, I'm sure it's still available, at least if you live anywhere near the ocean where a lot of items need to be hot-dip galvanized. Most car mufflers are galvanized; it would probably work fine as a coating. | ||

Thanks Electra - thinkin of just having mine chromed. A Buell with Bling?? Naa - just kiddin. I will do the pipes first & see how I like it. Would a 20 min ride be sufficient to reach the 'cure' temp ? j | ||

Brush it on and then thin to a nice even coating with a rag. Cures, if that is a proper term for this, shouldn't take long at all. If you go out in a rain it will then need some touching up. Kind of like waxing your pipes with this anti-seize instead of wax. Can't burn this stuff since it is good to 1600 F. I just do the pipes where they can be seen. You can do it in under 5 minutes.  My dealer is supposed to replace it Monday. I plan on taking it home yanking it off the bike and hitting the new one with three coats of grill paint. | ||

....i called buell customer service. They basically told me it was up to the dealer. Now the dealer is giving me the run around. Whats the deal? My header and muffler are both rusting. | ||

Interesting that you're getting a stainless header to rust....but I did note that Erik's own bike at Homecoming had orange on the muffler. Maybe Court did it, riding through some guys' field with it, taking pictures  | ||

I don't think the header on the 08s is stainless, as mine is rusting very nicely. Next time I'm by the shop, I'll show you. I was going to get it ceramic coated, but as thin as the metal is, and as much rust is going on there, I will rot it out while still under warranty. | ||

Stainless doesn't necessarily mean "rust proof". It's normal to get rusting around the welds, where the heat causes the chromium to precipitate out of the alloy, but you can get it in other locations too depending on what the headers are exposed to. | ||

Stainless steel can rust, too. There are lots of different SS alloys in use, and some can suffer rust easier than others. I had a stainless steel sink rust in about 2 months. It was the cheapest one you could get at the Depot, and I got what I paid for. | ||

You can always polish them. There are lots of threads on here about how to do it. | ||

WOOOhOOO. Dealer put a new muffler on mine today.....oops sorry. But he did. they flashed the ECM and I heard the fan for the first time going down the road after that. That is a loud fan. So should I take it off and paint it right away? | ||

yes, unless you want it to rust again. how do you get the dealer to replace it? seems many people aren't having your luck. | ||

I went to the salesman that sold it to me and asked him to look at it, and tell me what he thought. I just let the bike do the talking. He had me take it back to service and meet him there. |
