When I dropped my muffler for a repaint, I didn't read the manual. Another thread somewhere made me look it up and I see that the bands and the Torca clamp should be replaced every time. That seems extreme to me FWIW. Any thoughts on always replacing? Next time I am at the dealer I guess I'll order a set. The bands aren't much work to replace, but the Torca can wait until the next muffler repaint. |

As long as you don't overtighten them they are fine. I use muffler clamps to hold the mufflers together when welding and I couldn't count the times they've been on and off. Literally many, many hundreds. No issues or brakeage yet. |

I've never replaced the clamps on my Firebolt. Muffler's been off probably a dozen times or so. Handle them properly, don't overtorque them (the torque spec seems ridiculously low, but it works), and they're fine. |

You gotta put on your "lawyer hat." When you write the shop manual, your lawyer makes certain you specify that EVERY TIME you take off a fastener, you replace it with a new one... or if it loosened, got stretched, got worn out and failed - you'd be hauled into court. Face it, a lot of the call-outs in the manual are conservative. You can use your judgement. Muffler clamps if not over-torqued, if installed properly, if not abused, if not installed using permanent Loc-Tite - CAN be re-used. Use good judgement on the condition of the parts/pieces beign re-used and if in doubt, throw them out. All the above is just PERSONAL OPINION and is what I DO on MY OWN bikes. I've got boxes of misc used parts that I have "harvested" from a couple of my wrecked racebikes - PLUS I have 2 boxes of BRAND NEW Grade 8 coarse and Grade 8 fine thread fasteners also. I replaced my clamps when changeing the muffler because of what happened to the board member that lost their front strap and catapulted to a serious injury. Was that Wykedflesh or DiabloBrian? I can't remember but it was bad. |
