As some may remember, I have a 2008 1125R and recently brought it in for an aftermarket exhaust installation and latest flash ECM update.

After the service, I was told that there was no ECM update past that in November (03z). I argued otherwise and stated that while not shown on their "computer" it would only be found if the bike was put on the Digital Technician. The service manager argued that I was wrong.

Through members of this board, I provided evidence to the contrary, that there was in fact two flash updates since then , the latest being 05z.

I was just told that these are not "recalls" that they are "Retail updates that are not necessary and are $150 each plus $36 to hook up to the Digital Technician".

I have a call in to Buell Customer Service and gave Debbie, the person who answered the phone, my story and am awaiting a call back from a Buell technician regarding all of this.

Find a new dealer.

Buell, nor HD, has ever charged for an updated flash.

If you must use that dealer, tell him it's a warranty issue because the bike doesn't run right, and you'd like to have them fix it. They'd be stupid not to hook it up and see if there's a newer flash.

Of course, I'm betting they woudln't hook it up to see if there's a newer flash.

Paul:

That's not the way it works at my Dealer here in TN. Even though I was the one that informed the Service manager of the new flashes available, he just asked me if tomorrow would be soon enough? I brought it in the next PM and 60 mins later I was goooone.

For the first flash, I brought it in on a Saturday morning and they had to experiment a little to get all the adapters and everything configured correctly. 90 mins later I'm goooone.

When they hook it up to the Digital Technician, the DT tells them what rev the s-ware is and what's available. It's not like you are asking him to re-map your ECM for your new exhaust, or is it? If that's what he thought you asked, then that's not a bad price. BTW, you will probably need some re-mapping to get the best results from your exhaust.

Point of my story it cost me $0.00 either time. One would think that since you were spending some $'s at the Dealer, they could work in a 20-25min flash (one WOULD think).

No Neil, just the "Retail flash" (04z or 05z) costs $150 each + $36. They do offer a dyno tune but that is a separate service.

The 04z & 05Z are in fact not covered by a recall or product program update. Based on that the dealer is not bound to provide the update service for free.

Most dealers I have seen are willing to provide this as a "goodwill" update for free.

That being said, if your dealer isn't willing to do this work as goodwill, as others mentioned, I'd find another dealer.

Court - did a state this accurately?

I'll restate, and my dealer agreed with me, that Buell nor HD has charged for a flash update, especially on an in-warranty item.

It's not a recall, it's not a product program, but if I tell a dealer my brand new, under warranty bike is running as well as it should, Buell should pay for the new flash - not me.

OK, I understand. I don't expect to get much if anything for for free but just didnt expect to have to convince them that a later flash existed and then to be told it would be that much money.

I guess, after spending nearly $400 at that dealership to have them install the exhaust and to do a single dyno run, I expected them to say
"Hey, sure Paul we can throw it on the Digital Tech II and take a look for you. Heck it's right here in the shop and we just did all of that work for you (exhaust, I.C. replacement, brake line recall, Dyno run), no problem."

I wouldnt have had a problem with them adding "You know, it will be $36 to hook it up, though."

Oh well, another dealer it will be. Any suggestions in the Northern NJ area?

The 05Z calibration is a NON CHARGEABLE update. It says so right on the print out that the tech/service writer is supposed to give you any time they hook your bike up to the digital tech, along with your completed work order sheet.

PS Any dealer that is charging for this is being dishonest. IMHO

Yeah that's such BS, I'm in sales and, by choice, I just rolled out the digi tech and flashed all the Rs and CRs we have right on the sales floor. Find a new Dealer who actually cares about the Brand.

PS - I would email the dealership's GM and give him the link for this thread.

When I went into my dealer for the brake line routing recall, he checked the VIN and did all three of the the campaigns in about an hour, re-flash, side stand spring, fuel line, brake line and so on, no charge. In the time your guy spent arguing with you, he could have done the updates at no charge, woulda had a satisfied customer (you), and then moved on to a billable job.

You know what - he lists his Dealership as Liberty - is that where they told you you'd have to pay for the latest flash?

If that's the case, I would be EXTREMELY surprised. Liberty is sponsoring dealer for this forum and has lots of happy customers. You're either talking to somebody new or someone that's about the get fired.

Oh and one other thing, I believe that the digital tech will now ONLY allow the 05z update to be done, it skips and will not even display the other updates. If a dealer has to do any updates that require hooking the bike up to the digital tech I believe the 05z is the only one they can install.

Actually I remember Liberty being "confused" about charging for a free reflash. It was when the major update came out for the 08 models past fall IIRC.

Ask the service manager to contact Buell.

Thanks for all of the advice. Just doesnt seem to be good business to argue with over something as simple as hooking it up to the Digi-Tech, especially when the bike was in the shop for 4 days. But that's what happened.

I'll take my business elsewhere mainly because I find it hard to believe that I will get a fair shake with any future service that needs to be done.

Oh, two other questions: Is it true that 1)"the Buell 1125R doesnt need a 600 mile service - the first is scheduled for 1,000 miles" and 2)"the reason it took so long to get the instrument cluster is that it had to be sent out to be mileage-matched to the mileage on your current cluster"?

Thanks again,
Paul

The first service is scheduled for 620 miles.

Mileage match is not true. The mileage is stored in the ECM so when a new cluster is hooked up it reads the data frrm the ECM

Yes, that is what I thought, but the same service manager said otherwise.

CCmdoc,

Was it Liberty that told you all this? If so, I would like to know so that I can take them off my short list of future dealers. If it was not Liberty, I would like to know so that I do not have the wrong impression of them. Thanks.

Mike,
I really hate to badmouth any dealership - things change but threads live long past and sometimes hurt reputations even after problems are addressed. I'll PM you.

I have a hard believing that this is all coming from a service manager at Liberty - one of, if not the most Buell friendly dealer in the northeast.

Not calling you a liar, Paul, but this sounds like a new guy or something to me.
