Decided to get in a little ride this am before some friends came over for a bbq.... Went out Rt. 80 through South O, Otisco and ran into a couple buddies in Tully. We all left and were heading towards the city down Rt11a.....very nice, scenic slightly twisty road that runs through farms etc..... Was tooling along at a good clip....maybe 70-75 when out of the left side I see a fricking deer.......and he is crossing right in front of me......no time to brake......just stayed in it and held on tight.....bamm.....but I stayed up...just a little wobble....... I get it stopped and couldnt believe I wasnt still skidding along the road..... I caught his right rear and just sent him flying...... The guys I was riding with ( an Old friend of my family's...big ol harley guys) and he was white as a ghost.....said all he saw was a puff of fur and me wobble....thought for sure I was heading down.... Went back up to where it was.....was in the ditch dead....Was a good size button-buck (thats what the sheriff called it...?...I dont hunt) Gotta check it over better....but looks like he hit the fender and came around and smashed my Forcewinder filter and bent in the shifter....and thats really all....I still can not believe it.... |

that's freakin awesome. I've never heard of a motorcyclist hitting a deer before and not going down. fyi button buck means the buck is young, and doesn't have full grown antlers yet - only "buttons" |

Thanks for the kind words.... The funny thing (maybe not so funny) was the fact I was not scared or nervous at all during or after.....I have been in many different forms of "whoa craps" and this was different...felt totaly in control and just drove right through....sorta like Days of thunder.....lol.... Yeah I do all my hunting at Wegmans.....not much sport in it...but I walk out with my dinner....lol....they were surprised at the size of him.....( and the damage).....was gonna snap a pic or two...but thought that a little 'gross'.... I will get some pics of the bike....still can't believe it didnt do more damage. Gonna have to get a new filter....pretty smooshed..... |

The cop didn't make an exception to the no roadkill rule for you? I would take that SOB's head and mount it.... |

It must be going around. One of my retired riding buddies hit one last week and it took out his saddle bag on his cruiser. Jacked it up pretty good (the deer) and broke it's leg, they went back and put it out of it's misery. Seems everyone I ride with packs heat but me, most are former leo's. Glad to hear you're o.k. Worst thing I've hit was a turtle, it just came out of nowhere. |

I remember Dullorb (Tom) getting a bat to the chest one night. Knocked the wind out of him and had to pull over for a while. Worst I ever got was a pissed wasp that managed to go up the right cuff of my jacket. |

I have been there. I hit a deer on a little 250 enduro and crashed into a river at 40 mph, I have hit several cats and a skunk. of the 4 times hitting animals, I crashed 2 out of the 4 times. |

Glad you're okay, hitting wildlife can have very bad results! |

My old pastor had a similar occurence on his StreetGlide; he didn't go down either, but it split the deer in half and he was pickin' out guts for weeks. |
