Hello all. I just bought an '01 Blast for a great price, but it needs some love. I have got it close to running condition, but it doesn't want to start. The only real part I had to replace was the shoe tensioner for the primary chain. In addition, I swapped in a XB compensated clutch and XB engine sprocket. There are no alignment issues with the clutch and sprocket (spacer behind the clutch) and everything seemed to have gone smoothly on the reassembly. I added Formula+ trans fluid to the recommended level (which was only slightly covering the clutch basket), but this seems low. The service manual states that the capacity is 1qt, but after filling to the 'recommended' level, I probably have a half a quart in there. When I try to start the bike, I can hear the starter clicking, but it doesn't come to life. I have tried adjusting the primary chain tension, but no luck. I've also tried playing with the ball-ramp assembly on the clutch. I'm getting pretty frustrated, and though I think myself to be somewhat mechanically inclined, I think I may be over my head. Thanks for reading, Rob |

Does the starter crank the engine but it doesn't fire? If so you have to check 2 things, fuel and spark. If it doesn't crank, you have to focus on the starter circuit. You mentioned the starter clicking. That probably means it's not cranking. If so the things to check are the battery, the battery cables and the starter itself in that order. If you don't know the condition of the battery, have it charged with a low rate (2 amps or less) charger overnight and try starting it again, making sure the battery cables are tight on the batt terminals. If it still clicks and doesn't start, have the battery load tested by a reputable shop that deals with motorcycle batteries. |

Thanks for the reply Sparky. I did narrow it down to the battery because I was able to get it to crank after a good charge. However, now the only thing that happens when I try to start is a whirring sound. It seems like the starter isn't hooking up any more? Hopefully I haven't f#*%ed something up, but I'm not sure. I was able to get it to run for a few seconds. It had bad gas in it at this point, so I drained the old fuel, put some petroleum naphtha in, let it sit, drained it, and then put fresh gas in. With the new gas in, I was able to get it to crank, but now after a few tries it's just that whirring sound I mentioned. What do I do now? Thanks again. |

OK, the whirring but not engaging symptom sounds like a problem with the overrunning clutch/drive assembly. The overrunning clutch/drive assembly has a pinion gear that engages the clutch gear and a sliding gear that rides on splines. -- If the pinion gear teeth are worn, the manual says to replace the overrunning clutch. -- If the sliding gear or splines are dirty causing the pinion gear to not engage the ring gear on the clutch, remove foreign material, dirt or replace the overrunning clutch. Or, if the overrunning clutch part might be wearing out and not driving the engine even though the pinion gear does engage the ring gear, the fix is to replace the overrunning clutch. |

Is the overruning clutch the gear that engages the clutch when the starter solenoid is fired? I just put a new clutch in, so I would think that's not the problem. Do I get at it by taking off the primary cover, or is it on some other part of the bike? |

That's part of it. Here's an online BadWeB link to the 1996 S1 Service Manual which has the info I was paraphrasing. Go to Section 5 Electric Starter. That will give you a better idea of what the parts are and what they do. I'm taking a chance that the Blast starter is similar enough to the S1 so that troubleshooting techniques would be the same and give you an idea of what to do next. |

Hi, I have a similar problem. I have a 2002 blast and its turning over and I even had it running several times. But it has real problems with cold starting. To the point when i drain the battery trying to start it. I have changed the plug today and I am going to attempt to push start it and see if I can get it started. But why is it having these problems? The bike has only 850 miles. It has new gas in it and I even cleaned out the carbs. Do the automatic chokes go bad in these bikes? please help,,,, i am pulling my hair out |

Check your grounds. It may very well be something mechanical but I hate seeing someone play the parts replacing game before the "no-cost" checks are made. |

I found out what the actual problem was. The spline on the new (XB) engine sprocket was too larger to interface with the crankshaft. The magnets on the rotor/stator were so strong that it held it perfectly centered, and I didn't notice the issue when I first installed the sprocket and rotor shell assembly. Now that the proper sprocket has been re-installed, it turns over fine. Prior to that, the starter was turning the entire primary, but it wasn't hooking up with the crank. Thanks again. |
